Escape the ordinary
at historical Old Jail
Old Jail docent Marty Crawford makes a break for
it. But no worries, he is back leading tours at the his

Marty Crawford (AKA
Old Jail docent) fled on
foot from the 1906 Old Jail
coup as of last Monday. He
is up to his old chicks as a
well known egg supplier
here in Pickens County.
Word on the street is he is
in cahoots with multiple
layers of now uppity and
oh so wealthy chickens.
The price of our citi
zen’s favorite breakfast
item has risen dramatically
in the past few weeks. Mr.
Crawford desperately
needed to get out of the
Jasper pen and back to his
hen pen.
While their leader was
in the hoosegow the newly-
sophisticated chicks simply
refused to have anything to
do with egg production
hence the price soared.
Barnyard gossip has it that
Crawford, known for being
hen-pecked hence his foul
language, was put in charge
since Old McDonald, of
“had a farm” fame, passed
several years ago.
The yokes on you if you
don’t go by the Old Jail on
Main Street in Jasper. It is
restored into the 1906
eventual home of multiple
sheriffs. Stop by on the
weekend. Visit a time be
fore law enforcement had a
car or electricity, when
milk was churned and eggs
were scrambled atop a
wood burning stove.
See upstairs where steel
cages housed bootleggers,
saloon fighters and loose
women while they awaited
trial. Then take the short
walk next door to the his
torical log cabin. It is a fun
educational tour - and cur
rently costs less than a
dozen eggs.
The Old Jail is open on
weekends when volun
teers are available. HINT

Ukraine invasion subject of veterans' meeting
By Larry Cavender
Contributing Writer
Next week, Feb. 24th, will
mark the first anniversary of
the Russian incursion into
Ukraine. With that date ap
proaching, a local veterans
group heard from an author
ity on Ukraine at a luncheon
meeting held on Wednesday,
Feb. 8th at the Sconti Lodge
in Big Canoe.
North Georgia Veterans’
featured speaker was Lt.
General Ben Hodges (Ret.)
who was the Commanding
General of the U. S. Army,
Europe from 2014 to 2017.
Coincidentally, the year that
General Hodges began serv
ing as commander in Europe
was also the year that Russia
annexed the Crimea, and as a
result of his experience in
Europe during that time, he is
considered to be one of the
foremost military authorities
on the subject of Ukraine.
Hodges is a 1980 graduate
of West Point and served 37
years on active-duty before
retiring in 2017. Prior to
being the Commanding Gen
eral of the U. S. Army, Eu
rope, he served several years
with the 101st Airborne in
cluding tours in both Iraq and
Afghanistan.
At the meeting, which
was described by officials of
the North Georgia Veterans
organization as the largest
group to ever attend one of
their meetings, Hodges
rhetorically asked why de
feating Russia in the Ukraine
"is important to us." He then
emphatically stated that
"Russia needs to be crushed,
defeated."
Using Power Point maps,
he explained the history and
strategic importance of the
region around Ukraine and
especially the Crimean
Peninsula which juts into the
northern Black Sea. Russia
has long coveted a southern
port with access to the
Mediterranean Sea, and the
Black Sea could provide that
route. However, the only ac
cess to the Mediterranean via
the Black Sea is an isthmus
near Istanbul and it is con
trolled by Turkey. Hodges
noted that although the Re
public of Turkey is a "frus
trating ally, they are still an
ally."
As to the purpose of
Vladimir Putin's aggression,
Hodges said he did not par
ticularly believe Putin wants

to restore the Soviet Union,
but instead, he might be hop
ing to restore the former
Russian Empire that long
predated the USSR.
To those who have advo
cated acceptance of Russia's
Crimean annexation, Hodges
said, "If we let Russia have
Crimea, it'll be over, not in a
million years." He added,
"The idea that Russia can't be
defeated, that Ukraine can't
win, is absolutely not true,"
and he reiterated that Russia
"needs to be defeated."
In support of his belief
that Russia could indeed be
defeated, he pointed out that
Russia is now facing a seri
ous manpower shortage.
Also, those Russian soldiers
who have been occupying
Crimea for the past eight
years are now virtually iso
lated. A bridge from Russia
to the Crimean Peninsula,
completed by the Russians in
2018, was destroyed by ex
plosives just this past fall,
and the land route established
shortly after last year's inva
sion has been retaken by
Ukrainian forces.
So, to answer his earlier
question on "Why defeating
Russia in the Ukraine is im
portant to us," Hodges gave
three reasons. First, he said
the invasion was a violation
of an independent nation's
sovereignty and border in
tegrity; Secondly, because of
the terrible number of civil
ian casualties at the hands of
the Russian invaders we must
show that we have a respect
for human life; and finally,
by seeking Russia's defeat in
Ukraine, we are protecting
the framework of interna
tional law.
The presentation by
Hodges was well received by
the veterans, many of whom
remained following the for
mal meeting to ask questions
individually of the general.
