Ruth’s Remembrances- Just Cruising
By Ruth Parker
Back in the day, when my husband and
I were first married, vacations were not an
option for several reasons.
First of all, neither one of us were long
distance drivers. Secondly, he only had two
weeks vacation time in the summer, which
was usually spent in going to revivals. Be
cause of this, whenever our children had a
chance to go somewhere with their friends,
we let them go. I also was privileged to go
on several trips with Ann Parks.
The first trip I went on, there were four
of us, with Ann driving. We went to see the
Amish in Ethridge, Tennessee. Ann loved
the Amish’s simplicity of living. Later, we
went to an Amish Community in Ohio.
While there, we came by a yard sale. I said
that this was the farthest I had ever been to
a yard sale.
In 2009 I had an opportunity to go on a
I Caribbean cruise with Ann and a bunch of
her Happy Ramblers’ group. Since every
one needed a “buddy,” I asked my friend
at school if she might like to go. Her reply
was, “Let me check with my husband.”
Lo and behold, the next morning she
said his reply was “Go!” Our group was a
large one and, therefore not really that
costly. My friend was a wonderful “buddy”
since, unknown to me, she had already
been on one cruise. She helped me to nav
igate my way around the shop, which I
needed since I am prone to lose my way
going to yard sales.
Our ship travelled to the Bahamas, Nas
sau and the Florida Keys. I tndy loved
everything about that trip. We stayed on
deck as much as possible just to get to view
the ocean. Everything on the ship (food,
entertainment, etc.) was included in the
price, excepting strong drink and that, of
course, was no hardship to our group.
Ever since that trip I had spread the
word about what great vacations cruises
make. So last year when my daughter pro
posed a cruise around Thanksgiving, I was,
as they say, “On Board.”
Last November we went - our unex
pected turn of events next week.
