Total Surrender and Lent at Holy Family Episcopal
Clerestory Windows at Holy Family
On Sunday, February 26 at 8 a.m.
and 10:30 a.m. the Rev. George Yan-
dell will preach on what could seem
more senseless than Jesus getting
baptized?
Theologians have argued about it
for centuries. And what sense is there
to this wilderness temptation thing?
It's a great and dramatic story out of
which preachers get a lot of mileage,
but for Jesus, how senseless can it
get? Well,
there's this. Matthew says that it was
n't Jesus' idea after all, for as soon as
he was baptized, "Jesus was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness to be
tempted by the devil."
What specifically do we learn
from Jesus’ defining of his ministry
through this time in the wilderness?
As Mother Teresa wrote in Love: A
Fruit Always in Season (San Fran
cisco: Ignatius Press, 1987):
“Total surrender consists in giving
ourselves completely to God, be
cause God has given God’s self to us.
If God owed nothing to us and is
ready to impart to us no less than God
[full on], shall we answer with just a
fraction of ourselves? I give up my
own self and, in this way, induce God
to live for me. Therefore, to possess
God we must allow God to possess
our souls.”
On February 22 for Ash Wednes
day services at noon and 6 p.m., Dr.
David S. Pacini, Emory Professor
Emeritus, Candler School of Theol
ogy, will preach at both services to
kick off his Lent series about the
Great Vigil of Easter.
This series will continue through
out Lent on Wednesday evenings at 5
p.m., March 1 through April 5. Dr.
Pacini’s lectures will be followed by
Compline (a simple evening service)
and coffee/tea and snacks for any
who wish to stay and visit with Dr.
Pacini and one another. This prom
ises to an amazing series, all about
the Great Vigil and its theology, its
treatment over the centuries and its
biblical background.

Keep On Learning
By wisdom a house is built,
and by understanding it is
established; by knowledge
the rooms are filled with all
precious and pleasant
riches.
R.S. V Proverbs 24:3-4
T here is something inherently pleasant in learning new things. Even if
we aren’t likely to ever use that piece of trivia, it’s still interesting.
Indeed, our brains seem to be designed to learn new things. With a
hundred billion brain cells, and about fifteen thousand connections (or
synapses) per brain cell, we have, on average, about 1.5 quadrillion
connections in our brain. In infants, there is a rapid increase in synapses
until roughly the age of four, when children actually have more connections
than adults. This is no doubt why children are such fast learners. The bad
news is that the unused connections in our brains get pruned away after age
20, reaching the adult numbers around the age of 16. The good news is that
even well into our eighties and nineties we can continue to learn and make
new connections. We’re not going to learn a second language as fast as a 3-
year old, but we can still learn. Michelangelo is said to have remarked when
he was 87 that he was still learning. There’s no reason to ever stop learning,
and a hundred billion reasons to keep learning, to keep those neurons firing.
