Minister’s Comer
cause his wife Rosalyn was
an active member of the
Plains United Methodist
Church. He was not the first
Baptist to marry a Methodist.
The bishop’s prayer was
not long but reflected the
scripture that Carter had se
lected from the Prophet
Micah to be read. Bishop
Cannon prayed in part:
“Teach us that the only abid
ing influence we can ever
have in this world is the in
fluence of a good example ...
we pray that by thy grace we
can exert moral and spiritual
leadership in the world by be
coming as a nation what all
other people would like
themselves to be.” We were
being called to a spiritual and
moral standard.
The tone of the scripture
and prayer did not change
with President Carter’s
speech. He stated, “someday
the nations of the world
might say that we had built a
lasting peace, but not on
weapons of war but interna
tional policies which reflect
our most precious values.”
Fast forward to September
5, 1978 when Israeli Prime
Minister Menachem Begin,
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat and President Carter
met for 13 days at Camp
David. The two middle east
ern leaders had failed at
peace talks in 1977 on their
own but came together at the
request of the President ...
remember the prayer “abid
ing influence of a good ex
ample.”
Carter convinced the lead
ers not to meet without staffs
and not to have press inter
ruptions so the three of them
took an almost impossible
task of making peace be
tween Egypt and Israel. After
three days the talks were at
an impasse when Jimmy
Carter stepped in to save the
day.
The President drafted a
document with many of dis
cussion points and met with
each leader privately dis
cussing their views. Carter
rewrote these talking points
some 24 times working with
the leaders that led to the
Camp David Peace Accords
which was signed in March
of 1979.
As President, Carter lived
out his scripture “to act justly,
to love mercy and to walk
humbly with your God.” The
Holy Spirit blessed all three
men as the prayer was lived
out “to be good examples.”
We are not on the world
stage but we can draw inspi
ration for addressing our “im
possible situations” by
walking with God ourselves.
God is with you for peace.
FPC bids a fond farewell
Our Fellowship Presbyte
rian Church family said
goodbye to our beloved
Becky Laughlin on Saturday
morning, February 18 in a
memorial service led by Pas
tor Blake Hudson. Our re
cently retired minister Ben
Laughlin gave a stirring trib
ute to his dear wife of 54
years at her well attended
service. Each of their three
children also shared their
touching “Voicemails to
Mom.”
Becky was loved by fam
ily and friends and especially
our church choir with whom
she served for many years
singing alto. During the fu
neral her choir chair was
turned backwards and draped
with her choir stole. Becky
led Bible studies and served
a term as elder leading the
Fellowship Committee which
fit her caring and encourag
ing personality.
In FPC you will find
beautiful banners hanging
from the ceiling in our fel
lowship hall and displayed in
our sanctuary for holidays
and special services. Becky
helped create and assemble
each of them.
In addition to her full time
job in insurance, Becky made
being a pastor’s wife look
easy. She always had a kind
word and a listening ear for
everyone she met. Brain can
cer took her too early, derail
ing long planned travels, but
our church family is richer
because of her love and serv
ice for 21 years.
We will miss you Becky
but rest easy. We will take
care of Ben and your pup
pies.

February 19-February 25
February 19th:
On this day in 1977, New York Rangers
right winger, Rod Gilbert, achieved a club
first. Although the Rangers suffered a 5-2 loss
to the New York Islanders, Gilbert became
the first player in franchise history to tally
1,000 points. He assisted a Mike McEwen
goal 14 minutes into the game before finding
the net himself at the 12:01 mark of the sec
ond period. Gilbert’s goal gave the Rangers
a 2-1 lead, but the Isles scored four unan
swered times to put the game away.
February 20th:
On this day in 1981, the sibling duo of
Peter and Anton Stastny each registered their
first NHL hat trick during a game against the
Vancouver Canucks. These brothers and Que
bec Nordiques teammates scored twice
apiece, accounting for the team’s first four
goals. This included Anton’s power play net-
ter, which took place at the 1:07 mark of the
second period. Both completed their trifectas
during the final frame as Peter got a special
teams tally of his own with 5:20 remaining.
Quebec scored five straight times before van
quishing Vancouver, 9-3.
February 21st:
On this day in 2000, Buffalo Sabres goal-
tender, Dominik Hasek, became the first Eu
ropean to win 200 NHL games. The
Czechoslovakia native made 35 saves during
the Sabres’ 3-2 victory over the New Jersey
Devils. Hasek retired in 2008 with 389 wins
and became a member of the Hockey Hall of
Fame in 2014.
February 22nd:
On this day in 1981, the Hartford Whalers
hosted the Rangers at the Hartford Civic Cen
ter. This was the first-ever NHL game that
featured two American-born head coaches.
Hartford’s Larry Pleau, a native of Lynn,
Massachusetts, stood behind the bench
against his New York counterpart, Craig
Patrick, who was bom in Detroit, Michigan.
The Whalers broke a tie when right winger,
Blaine Stoughton, scored the game-winning
goal with 3:11 remaining in regulation. Hart
ford hung on to defeat the Rangers, 6-5.
February 23rd:
On this day in 1972, the Boston Bruins be
came the first team in NHL history to win a
game after trailing by five goals. Boston
scored seven unanswered times to pull off an
8-6 victory over the California Golden Seals.
The Bruins’ first two goals of this stretch
came during the second period, when Bobby
Orr assisted Wayne Cashman and Fred Stan
field. Orr found the net himself in the third
before Stanfield completed his hat trick. Phil
Esposito scored twice, including the go-
ahead goal that gave Boston its first lead at
the 17:11 mark. Derek Sanderson cemented
the contest by adding an empty netter with 14
seconds remaining.
February 24th:
On this day in 1980, the Rangers jumped
out to a 5-0 second period lead before romp
ing the Islanders, 8-2. The Rangers also tal
lied five power play goals, with two coming
courtesy of center, Walt Tkaczuk. Phil Espos
ito netted the next two in the second period
before Ron Duguay buried one of his own in
the third. Duguay scored twice for the
Rangers in their convincing win.
February 25th:
On this day in 1995, Philadelphia Flyers
left winger, John LeClair, played his first
game in Montreal since arriving in the “City
of Brotherly Love”. LeClair helped the Cana-
diens win the Stanley Cup in 1993, but this
day saw him return to the Forum and haunt
his former team. He scored Philadelphia’s
first two goals in the second period before
polishing off the trifecta at the 1:13 mark of
the third. Ron Hextall made 18 saves and
posted the 10th shutout of his career during
the Flyers’ 7-0 blanking.

curred. This brought about
the end of the race with Sten-
house being declared the
winner due to being first at
the moment the caution came
out.
Overall, this was a good
Daytona 500. Daytona is a
superspeedway, and super
speedway races involve driv
ers racing in packs and not
spread out. For the majority
of the race, there was a lot of
side-by-side action for the
lead. There wasn’t an insane
amount of movement
throughout the field during
the race, but drivers on the
inside and outside lane could
get good runs off of comers,
which led to many passes for
the lead and a good amount
of passing throughout the
rest of the field. There were
52 lead changes, which even
for a superspeedway race is
really good. Many drivers
were able to lead the pack
like Larson, Bowman,
Logano, Busch, and Sten-
house. All of these lead
changes, with side-by-side
racing, and good movement
throughout the field made
this race very exciting to
watch. It had boring parts
where there would be single
file racing, but for the most
part was still pretty solid rac
ing. It did end anti-climacti-
cally under caution, so that
definitely hurts the race a bit
since the finish is what peo
ple would remember most
from the race.
Next week, we head out
west to Auto Club speedway
in Fontana. Last year’s race
was fantastic, so let’s see if
next week is just as exciting.
