Ruth’s Remembrances- Just
Cruising, Part II
By Ruth Parker
As I said last week, my
daughter, Jincy, wanted to
go on a “Girls’ Trip” cruise
last year. She, my other
daughter Amanda, me and
my sister-in-law Teresa,
made up the group and
began planning. I was
asked where I wanted to go.
Since I love history, I
replied that I had always
wanted to see the Mayan
ruins. Now, understand that
this trip is taking place
about 16 years after the first
one I went on with Ann’s
group. In other words, I’m
16 years older. I mentioned
the Mayan trip not realizing
how much walking it
would require. But I had al
ready committed, so the
planning stage began.
The date selected was
during Thanksgiving holi
days while the kids were
out of school, that meant
leaving their dad and papa
in charge, that was “worry
number one.” “Worry num
ber two:” Since we were
not leaving until the Tues
day before Thanksgiving
and not getting back until a
week later on Tuesday, we
had two school-age kids to
be gotten to school and
picked up. Thankfully, their
dad was able to take off an
additional two days of
Thanksgiving holiday.
Since our trip was to be
during Thanksgiving, I de
cided to have our Thanks
giving dinner the weekend
before. That way, my hus
band would have lots of
leftovers for the following
week.
Teresa had lost her hus
band, my husband’s
brother, just that January.
All that planning helped
her to have something fun
to focus her thoughts upon
during that summer, the
summer was spent on mak
ing lists, accumulating
“stuff we need” and later
discarding some of that
“essential stuff.”
Jincy says that all the
groups on the ship had
“themes” so she plans us a
“Golden Girls” theme, or
dering each of us an indi
vidual t-shirt. I, of course,
was “Sophia.”
After lots of planning,
packing, unpacking and
more planning, we finally
got underway. Everyone
met at my house early on
Tuesday morning before
Thanksgiving. Jincy and
Amanda were to take turns
driving to Louisiana to our
port of departure. They
drove straight down with
only one stop for lunch. We
arrived in New Orleans late
that evening and spent the
night at a hotel close to our
port.
Early the next morning
we proceeded to our ship.
Knowing that there would
be a lot of walking, I had
brought along my handy-
dandy walking stick. Since
you can’t visualize how
you look, you don’t realize
how you appear to other
people. In other words, you
look more pitiful than you
realize. Suddenly, a young
man appears asking if I
need a wheelchair because
the ramp to the ship is long
and steep. I say, confi
dently, of course not. But
he insists so a wheelchair
materializes. I got in it and
away we go. Bypassing the
long waiting line, up to the
front. Of course the other
three in my party fall in be
hind me. A remark was
made wondering why that
wasn’t thought of before
and to say it might come in
handy later. Was I being
used? But by the time we
got up the ramp I was glad
and thankful for the chair.
We eventually got to our
room. Speaking of a room
with a view. We were on
top, in the forward section
with a spectacular view
from our room.
Well, looks like I’ll have
to wait until week for our
unexpected turn of events.
