A look back at February 1948
Thursday, February 19, 1948:
‘E.L. Patterson Dies from Knife
Wounds’: Mr. Edward L. Patterson, age
70, died about 2 o’clock on Wednesday
morning from a slash by a knife across
the throat, which he received between
7:30 and 8 o’clock Tuesday night.
Mr. Sidney Mathis says that Mr. Edward
L. Patterson and his brother, Mr. H.K.
Patterson, came to his home and that the former was bleeding
freely from a knife wound in the throat. They were in a buggy
and asked him to get Mr. Edward Patterson to a doctor as
quick as he could. They first stopped at the home of Mr. Mar-
ley DeBoard, a son-in-law of Mr. Edward Patterson, but his
car was away, and they carried him to the home of another
son-in-law, Mr. Dewey Cantrell, where he was placed in an
automobile and rushed to the hospital.
Mr. Patterson was still conscious when they reached the
hospital, but refused to discuss the case with City Policemen
Oscar Barrett and J.C. Henderson.
Mr. H.K. Patterson says that they were out together but that
he knows nothing about the cutting.
Both men are said to have been drinking.
The affair occurred near the Stokes Railroad Crossing on
the old road from Jasper to Talking Rock.
Mr. Edward Patterson was a native of Pickens and a mem
ber of Philadelphia Baptist Church and was absolutely honest
in his business dealings.
Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife, the former Miss Sarah
Catherine Watkins, of Talking Rock, and the following chil
dren: Mr. Lewis Patterson, of Jasper and warden of Pickens
County; Mr. Levi Patterson, of Jasper; Mrs. Dewey Cantrell,
Mrs. Clayton DeBoard, Sr.; Mrs. Marley DeBoard and Mrs.
Pose Collins, all of Talking Rock; Mrs. Phillip McEntire and
Mrs. Albert Williams, of Jasper; and Mrs. Weldon Hendrix,
of Talking Rock. Also two brothers, Mr. H.K. Patterson, of
Talking Rock, and Mr. Tom Patterson, of Talking Rock.
Funeral services will be conducted at Philadelphia Friday
afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. G.F. Compton, S.L. Padgett
and M.R. Chambers, with the Poole Funeral Home undertak
ers in charge.
Thursday, February 26, 1948:
‘Preliminary Trial for H.K. Patterson This Afternoon’:
Last Thursday afternoon Mr. H.K. Patterson was arrested
and charged with killing his brother, Mr. E.L. Patterson on
the night of February 17.
A preliminary hearing will be given him this Thursday af
ternoon at the Pickens County High School gymnasium.
Mr. H.K. Patterson told officers that he and his brother had
been to Jasper that afternoon in a buggy. That both raised
game roosters for the market, that his brother had an order
and needed one of his to fill it.
He asked $5.00 for the rooster and Mr. E.L. Patterson said
it was not worth over $3.00. He said both were drinking and
that he remembers no cutting or fighting. He is 80 years old
and his brother was 70. He was allowed to attend the funeral.
