Redman told the Progress
discussions with the insur
ance agent indicate the inte
rior will be a total loss, but
that they have plans to re
open.
“With the extent of the
damage it’s going to take a
while, but we will,” Redman
said. “The celebration we
were supposed to have this
week will just have to be a

According to the Jasper
Fire statement, “The cause of
the fire is being investigated
by the Jasper Fire Depart
ment, but all indications are
that the fire was accidental in
nature. We would like to
thank our automatic aid part
ners, Pickens Fire and
Bethany-Salem Fire for their
response to this incident.”

of the accidents, several inter
viewees also identified the
traffic light with the yield sig
nal as confusing for young
drivers. "There’s not a lot of
lights like that in the county,"
says a junior at PHS who
senses the inconsistency of
lights and rules for yielding in
the county can create a prob
lem for new drivers who are
just beginning to grasp the
basics.
In addition, students were
also interviewed about pro
posed and alternate solutions
to help fix the issue. Most of
the interviewees viewed in-
person driving instruction as
crucial to driver’s education.
A senior at PHS states,
"We need more practical ex
perience driving with some
one who can offer good
advice."
Criticism of already pro
posed solutions, such as a
roundabout or a new traffic
light, were also discussed.
Some interviewees feel
that a roundabout is more
complicated and difficult to
navigate for new drivers. A
junior at PHS expresses a fre
quently heard sentiment
about the roundabout solution
among students. "Students in
Pickens County get to a
roundabout and are like, what
do we do here?".
Although there were dif
fering opinions on the solu
tion, all students interviewed
agreed that more safety meas
ures are needed at the inter
section.
A junior at PHS urges the
community to realize that "no
matter how much you say it,
you're never going to get a
student who fully wants to
follow traffic laws. We need
to do more than just enforce
the speed limit,"

Vegetable Garden Basics:
Site selection and soil preparation

As the days warm up and
we get closer to spring, many
are preparing to start planting
their gardens. For some, this
could be the first time plant
ing a garden and it can be a
little overwhelming, how
ever, learning some basics in
gardening can be quite easy
and will help you produce a
successful garden.
The first step anyone
should take is finding the ap
propriate site to plant. Most
vegetable gardens are going
to require at least six hours of
direct sunlight per day. The
area needs to have well
draining soil where water
does not puddle up or have
steep slopes where the soil
may erode.
A close water source can
also be a consideration when
selecting a site. You will also
want to make sure the area is
not in the root zone of black
walnut trees, as they produce
a chemical that can interfere
with the growth of vegeta
bles. Be sure to take note of
where your underground util
ity lines are as you prepare
for site preparation.
The size of your garden
site will be dependent on the
type of product you want to
grow. Some crops such as
beans, onions, squash, and
tomatoes are great options for
first-time gardeners. It is best
for a beginner to start small,
with easy-to-grow crops,
then scale up in the following
year as you become more fa
miliar and comfortable with
your gardening skills.
It is important to also
know how large the crops
you selected will grow at full
maturity. If plants are too
crowded they will be less
productive, difficult to main
tain, and much more likely to
have disease issues. Tomatoes
are a plant that should not be
touching each other when
fully mature due to the spread
of disease.
Trellising tomatoes, as
well as cucumbers, will help
with spacing requirements to
ensure proper growth and less
chances of disease spreading.
Other vegetables such as
beans should be spaced in
rows according to the instruc
tions on your chosen seed
packet.
The last step before plant
ing is preparing your soil. It is
always recommended to do a
soil test before making any
soil amendments. This simple
step can save you a lot of
money in fertilizer and soil
amendments. If the site is a
brand new area to be planted,
you will want to remove any
existing vegetation. A sod
cutter is often available to
rent and can be a quick way
to remove grass in a large
area. If it is a small area, then
a hand shovel can work as
well. After removing any ex
isting vegetation, cover the
area with a tarp, black plastic
or even cardboard to smother
out any remaining vegetation.
By this stage, you should
have the results back from
your soil test. Your test is
going to show the soil pH and
several nutrients. It will also
give a list of recommenda
tions for your specific veg
etable garden. The optimal
pH for a vegetable garden is
around 6.5, if your soil is not
around a range of 6.0-7.2 rec
ommendations will be made
to adjust this pH and to get
you and your garden on the
right track for a fruitful grow
ing season.
