Relationships Vs. Issues?
Are you more con
cerned about issues or
your relationships? “Rela
tionships are more impor
tant than the issues,” said
Dr. Lewis Leon, former
Rector of St. John’s Epis
copal Church in Washing
ton, DC. “Issues box us
in a corner and we and
never free ourselves for
communication and so we
stay separated in our own
little worlds.”
His church was across
the street from the White
House and Bill Clinton,
George W. Bush and
Barack Obama, were in
church when in town. Dr.
Leon stated, they knew
how I felt about social is
sues from my sermons
and I never approached
any of them personally
about an issue.
Presidents Bush and
Obama had so much re
spect for Leon that they
invited him to pray at
their inaugurations. Bush
even gave a dinner for
him at the White House to
celebrate his 25th an
niversary as rector of St.
John’s. Their differences
on issues and politics did
not over ride their friend
ships. Are you listening?

Despoiling
the Earth
The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine
and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.
Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must
provide for the redemption of the land.
Leviticus 25:23-24
While there may be legitimate differences of opinion about how much environmental
degradation we are wreaking on our planet, there is little doubt that we are causing harm
when half a million people can’t drink the water in their area, as happened last summer in
Ohio. I remember as a child in the 1960s when Lake Erie “died” and when the Cuyahoga River
caught on fire. We brought Lake Erie back from the brink, but we have short memories. The
Chesapeake Bay regularly suffers from fertilizer runoff and last year the Gulf of Mexico had an
oxygen-deprived dead zone that was the size of New Jersey. Surely we can take better care of
our planet, and should remember that the air we breathe and the water we drink is essential to
our survival. In the late 1960s when environmental concerns came to the forefront in this
country the earth’s population was approximately 3.5 billion people. We now have double that
number, with over 7 billion people inhabiting our planet. Surely this calls for some careful
thought about our impact on the planet. The earth is a gift from God and we have a duty as
stewards of creation to take care of it. We should do what we can personally to be more
environmentally conscious, and also to consider getting involved in efforts to persuade
businesses and government leaders to take better care of our environment.
