Kaitlyn Saranthus - STAR Student Finalist
Tonya Russo - STAR Teacher Finalist
Kaitlyn is the daughter of
Jill and Reese Saranthus, and
she has one sister, Tori
Saranthus.
Questions to Kaitlyn
1) Briefly describe your
plans after high school grad
uation.
I plan to attend Georgia
Southern and major in Writing
and Linguistics with a dual
major of International Studies,
emphasis on the Spanish lan
guage.
2) What were your reasons
for selecting your STAR
Teacher?
Mrs. Russo was the one
teacher at PHS who allowed me
to adjust my learning environ
ment to my needs while in her
classroom.
3) What advice would you
give to a rising freshman at
PHS?
Dual enroll at your soonest
availability, regardless of which
'Track” you follow; there’s more
to your future decision making
than high school.
4) What is your most mem
orable educational experi
ence in school?
(Kindergarten to present)
In my freshman year, I con
vinced my Civics teacher to let
us throw a party for Thomas
Payne’s 283rd birthday. That
was a few weeks before the first
COVID lockdown.
Questions to Mrs. Tonya
Russo
1) Briefly describe your
STAR Student.
Kaitlyn Saranthus is one of
the most energetic and outgoing
students I've ever taught. Her
energy is infectious and she has
an insatiable appetite for knowl
edge. She's curious and accept
ing of challenges and she can
make almost anything fun! She
can never understand why
some students choose to throw
away opportunities for educa
tion -1 absolutely love that about
Kaitlyn! She's incredibly bright
and motivated. She has a stel
lar future ahead other.
2) What do you consider
the most important element of
a successful teaching pro
gram?
When possible, I believe it's
extremely important to try and
get to know students as people
- especially at this age (high
school). Students are maturing,
understanding themselves, and
thinking about what comes next
after school.
Anytime I can build on that
and tie it in with what we're
doing in class, it makes the ma
terial more personal and allows
students to buy into what we're
learning and put their own per
sonal stamp on their work.
3) What advice would you
give our STAR Students as
they prepare to leave high
school?
Hard work creates its own
rewards. Work for what you
want; don't get distracted by the
little things that come along. It's
also perfectly fine to change
your mind about something or
someone - do what is best for
YOU. Don't forget to make time
to see family and friends as
often as possible!
Mrs. Russo has been
teaching for 26 years and she
is currently the Chair of the
Foreign Language Depart
ment at PHS. She is married
to Brian Robertson.

John Carter Wilson - STAR Student Finalist
Judith Barber - STAR Teacher Finalist
John Carter is the son of
John and Kelley Wilson, and
he has one brother, Spencer
Wilson.
Questions to John Carter
1) Briefly describe your
plans after high school grad
uation.
I plan to attend UGA to be
come a chemical engineer.
2) What were your reasons
for selecting your STAR
Teacher?
Mrs. Barber has been one of
my favorite teachers since hav
ing her my freshman year. Along
with being a great teacher, she
has always been welcoming to
me outside of school when
spending time with her son, who
is one of my best friends. Not
only is Mrs. Barber a great
teacher and mother, but she has
been an extremely strong per
son in general.
The past few years have not
been easy for her, but she has
stayed tough and positive in her
care for her family and has con
tinued being a great teacher to
the children at school. Her re
sponse and reaction to these tri
als of life has set a great
example to everyone around her
on how they should never give
up, no matter how hard things
get. I believe if anyone deserves
to be a STAR teacher, it is Mrs.
Barber.
3) What advice would you
give to a rising freshman at
PHS?
Treat your teachers with re
spect.
4) What is your most mem
orable educational experience
in school? (Kindergarten to
present)
My trips with the TSA have
always been very fun and mem
orable experiences.
Questions to Mrs. Judith Bar
ber
1) Briefly describe your
STAR Student.
John is bright, creative, and
clever. He is open to instruction
and new ideas, and he actively
applies himself to the learning
process. With his enthusiasm for
learning, John has the intrinsic
motivation so important for aca
demic success. During the time
that I had the pleasure of having
him in my classroom, John was
respectful and polite and even
condescended to laughing at
some of my awful puns.
Outside the classroom, he is
my own son's best friend, and
he has been a faithful one. They
have enjoyed playing music to
gether as John's talents extend
beyond the classroom to both
playing and building guitars.
Multi-talented and intelligent,
John is a well-rounded young
man. It is my privilege to know
him.
2) What do you consider
the most important element of
a successful teaching pro
gram?
Humility. A teacher who real
izes that she does not have all
the answers, and isn't afraid for
her students to know it, creates
a successful learning environ
ment. First, she shows her stu
dents that she too is a learner
and open to learning, creating a
good example for her students
to follow.
This puts students at ease
and opens up the possibilities of
a cooperative learning environ
ment. In addition, a teacher who
is humble is open to trying new
strategies when the "tried and
true" tactics of the past aren't
proving effective in present situ
ations. A teacher who stubbornly
clings to old ideas is placing her
own comfort above the needs of
the people she is meant to serve
and sabotages the success of
both. In these ways, and many
others, humility is a core charac
teristic of a successful teacher.
3) What advice would you
give our STAR Students as
they prepare to leave high
school?
First, Remember that you
don't have to have it all figured
out. Your college major doesn't
determine your destiny, so take
time to try new things and find
new passions even after you
have your degree; it's just the
starting point. And secondly,
success doesn't have to come
from changing the world. Mean
ing and purpose are found in
making a positive difference in
the lives of people you meet
each day, one small act of kind
ness at a time.
Mrs. Judith Barber has
been teaching for 14 years
and currently teaches ELA at
PHS. Her husband is the late
Garry Barber.
