Diamond Dragons sweep Gilmer Bobcats
Starting pitcher Connor Shouse (6-1) did most
of the heavy lifting on the mound in the Dragons ’
opening game against rival Gilmer Bobcats with
11 strikeouts in five innings of work. The junior
right-hander also had a home run, two walks
and two runs scored at the plate.
Team 11-1
on season
The Pickens baseball team
continued to roll along last
week by sweeping a three-
game region series with
Gilmer and extending its win
ning streak to a school-record
12 consecutive games.
By doing so, the #2 state-
ranked Dragons pushed their
record to 19-3 on the year and
their region 7-AAA mark to
11-1.
Pickens started the week
off right with a 7-1 win in the
opening game of the series.
The Dragons banged out nine
hits in the victory while three
pitchers limited the Bobcats
to only one base hit, which
came with one out in the final
inning. Starting pitcher Con
nor Shouse (6-1) did most of
the heavy lifting on the
mound with 11 strikeouts in
five innings of work. The jun
ior right-hander also had a
home ran, two walks and two
runs scored at the plate. Jun
iors Cason Cannon and J.P.
Nunn finished the last two in
nings on the mound and
recorded a combined four
strikeouts to close out the vic
tory.
The Dragons hosted the
second game of the week and
they gave the home crowd
plenty of excitement in the
12-2 win. The trio of fresh
man A.J. Rice and seniors
Evan Giddens and Colby
Brooks proved to be too much
for the Bobcats at the plate.
They combined for six hits,
six runs scored and five
runs driven in to propel the
nine-hit Dragons’ attack. Jun
ior pitcher James Tilley con
tinued his winning ways with
a complete game effort on the
mound. He allowed four hits
while striking out six to earn
the win and push his season
mark to 5-0.
The series finale had the
visiting Dragons push across
five runs in the first inning
and never looked back in the
12-0 win. Rice was the story
on the mound as the righty
was virtually untouchable
after allowing a base hit on
his first pitch. Following that
hit, Rice pitched only 4.0 in
nings and struck out 10 with
out allowing a walk and only
one other hit. By earning the
victory, he is now 6-0 on the
season.
Nunn struck out the side in
the fifth to end the contest for
Pickens. The offense scattered
seven hits and five walks
while junior Trey Payne and
freshman Kam Jenkins each
knocked in a pair of runs to
lead the Dragons.
Pickens headed into the
spring break with a firm grip
on first-place in the region
and three-game series against
Dawson County (12-8, 8-4).
The Dragons play host this
week in the series on Tuesday
and Friday (April 7) and
travel to Dawson on Thursday
(April 6). Each game is slated
for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

PJHS Girls and Boys Soccer
The 2023 spring season
for the PJHS boys soccer
team has come to an end.
The season started with a
string of losses and lots of
learning as the young group
worked to improve. The
spirit and effort of the young
Dragons did not wane during
the season and the boys were
excited to notch a 1-0 win
against Fannin. The boys’
Peyton Krajcovic scored the
winning goal for the Drag
ons. The boys have devel
oped throughout the season
and are looking forward to
putting in the work to im
prove next season.
The PJHS girls soccer
team has enjoyed a strong
season and have played them
selves into the Mountain
League championship game
vs. Dawson County. Last
week, the #2 seed Nettes trav
eled to #3 seed Gilmer for a
semi final match-up to ad
vance. Pickens came home
with a 3-1 win goals by Piper
Johnson and Quincy Flatt and
an assist by Mollie Thomas.
The 3-1 win was an improve
ment over their last match up
with Gilmer when the young
Nettes notched a 1-0 win. The
PJHS team is tentatively
slated to face Dawson in the
championship match on April
18th at Dawson. The Nettes
fell to the Lady Tigers in their
only match up of the season
0-3.
