The Jasper Downtown
Development Authority ap
proved further work to trans
form the popular concert
series Second Saturdays into
Jasper Downtown Live, with
a new logo and the contract
ing of a paid social media di
rector during a March 27th
meeting.
Presented by authority
member J Cornelius, the new
logo features the name Jasper
Downtown Live.
Explaining again the shift
in names, the authority mem
bers said they had made the
decision earlier to allow more
flexibility. Second Saturday
is a good name when all
events fall on second Satur
days but when they need a
different date, such as sur
rounding July 4th or with a
school break, it’s hard to pro
mote an event that doesn’t
fall on the second Saturday.
This year the series will
span more months and is
mostly finalized, said event

Cornelius presented two options. Similar font patterns
that can be used to promote the events. With the name
Downtown Live, the title is flexible for different date.

chair Marty Callahan.
Dates announced are for
concerts on May 13th; June
6th; July 15th; August 12th;
and October 14th.
Callahan said the per
formers are mostly finished
and he will announce them
shortly.
The authority also ap
proved a down payment for a
contract with a social media
person Crucial Social. The
total would be $600 a month
to promote Downtown Live
events. However, Callahan
questioned the total and the
authority agreed to fund
$1,000 towards it now and
see where they stood on
funding before agreeing to
the total amount of $3,000.
City Council member
Kirk Raffield, who also sits
on the DDA, reported that
Hemlocks Landscaping will
replace some of the Main
Street trees/shrubs. Raffield
said it was unfortunate that in
the first year the city went to
a professionally managed
streetscape Mother Nature
had been cruel; some of their
plants had died. DDA chair
Amy Leake said they had
been working on streetscape
planting plans for at least
seven years and she is excited
to see “a permanent solu
tion.”
The DDA discussed a plan
to put speakers along Main
Street with the ability to pro
vide music at any time. The
initial installation would cost
approximately $25,000.
Cornelius said he thinks
the businesses with a vested
interest in Main Street will
fund this. There would also
be a monthly fee to use music
from a service that makes
sure all copyright issues are
covered.
Callahan said the speakers
would be a great asset for the
live concerts as the system
could play the stage music
throughout the downtown so
the stage speakers wouldn’t
need to be as loud.
Details for the music sys
tem use would still need to be
worked out in regards to time
when it is active and genre,
but the system can be easily
managed, according to Cor
nelius.
It was pointed out that
Ball Ground uses a similar
system and people like it.
DDA member Jack Dunn
said the music will improve
sales at downtown busi
nesses. He said the music
will get people excited and
they will spend more.
Chairperson Leake closed
by saying that she hopes peo
ple realize all the DDA mem
bers are volunteers who put
in a lot of time and hard work
with no pay.
