Master Gardeners will teach how to Plant This - Not That
By Dee Boggus
Pickens Master Gardener
More than once at the
“Ask a Master Gardener”
table in the Jasper Farmer’s
Market we have received
queries regarding invasive
plants.
An invasive plant is de
fined as any plant spreading
so precipitously as to displace
native plant communities.
This rapid annexation can
cause significant harm to sur
rounding environments as na
tive species currently
nurturing wildlife are edged
out.
Invasive plants often ma
terialize via global trade,
human, or animal transport.
After gaining a toehold, inva-
sives can be further dispersed
by means of wind, birds, and
insects.
Unfortunately, even native
plants can be considered in
vasive if their vigorous habits
decrease overall biodiversity,
threatening other native
ecosystems.
Of course, plant growth
habits that are acceptable
within my own two-acre
planting zone might not be at
all tolerable for any gardener
planning a petite garden. And
while I love my purple
blooming native Phlox divar-
icata, this plant spreads fairly
rapidly via seeds and will
overgrow a bed if not kept in
check.
Abetter choice might be a
different native phlox, Phlox
paniculata, as its more mod
erate growth habit would bet
ter suit gardens with limited
space allowances. You can
also purchase hybrid versions
of Phlox divaricata that will
not spread rampantly via
seed.
Although most invasive
plant listings for a given area
do not include natives, you
can access the University of
Georgia’s current list of inva
sive plants at this website:
https://gatrees.org/wpcon-
tent/uploads/2020/02/Inva-
sive-Plants-of-Georgia-Fores
ts.pdf.
Be aware that this list is
fluid as researchers discover
new aspects that might add or
even subtract plants.
If you are interested in
learning about invasive
plants, Pickens County Mas
ter Gardeners are hosting an
educational event called
“Plant This - Not That” on
June 3rd at the Pickens
County Extension Office on
68 D.B. Carroll Street in
Jasper, GA. At this event you
will learn what to plant and
what to avoid planting in
your garden.
This program has been
created by Bartow County
Master Gardener Kerry
Defoe and will take place
from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Due to
space limitations only 30
seats are available for this
event so please call 706-253-
8840 or email

Farmers Market Report
Strollers (the baby kind), strollers (walkers) and furry friends pack weekly market
Cammy’s Creations puts a new spin on some of your fa
vorite sweet treats!
By Heather Giambra
Not a good day to have
forgotten your hat. Warm and
bright at the Jasper Farmers
Market and the Park-n-Ride
parking lot was full of ven
dors and their tents.
The Veterans Memorial
parking lot was full, too, with
customers and their cars.
Lots of energy and activity at
the market. Strollers, the
baby kind, and strollers, the
people kind, walked the mar
ket, along with the furry
kind, including a basset
hound.
This Mother’s Day weekend
certainly put into mind the
local advice to wait on plant
ing flowers until now. The
plant vendors were full up
with veggie seedlings and
hanging pots full of colorful
flowers perfect for porches.
The veggie vendors were
full up with Spring greens,
broccoli, cauliflower, radish,
carrots, onions, and more. It
was a matter of getting there
early enough before they got
sold out.
Next month the Wednes
day Summer market will be
open for all the extra fresh
veggies that will be avail
able.
If you have a need for
sweets, Cammy’s Creations
certainly can fill the ticket
with homemade candies.
Bo’s Biscuits offered the
pooch treats and stylish
pooch wear. Little Brook
Farms brought their trailer
full of freezers full of meat.
On the other aisle you
could find knitted bouquets
next to doggie scarves next
to head bands (for people).
Heather Turner of Parker Pet
Photography was set up for
taking perfect pet portraits.
The Jasper Farmers Mar
ket is sponsored by the Pick
ens County Master
Gardeners and located at Lee
Newton Park. Saturday
mornings. The market opens
at 7:30 am when market
manager, Jenny Fellenbaum,
rings the bell and ends at
noon.
The Master Gardeners
will be hosting a guest
speaker, Kerry Defoe, at the
Extension Office at 68 D.B.
Carroll Street, Jasper, on Sat
urday June 3rd, 1 - 3 p.m.
“Plant This - Not That” is
about the invasive plants
damaging our environment.
Learn what to plant and what
to avoid planting in your gar
den. Kerry Defoe is a Master
Gardener from Bartow
County and the District Di
