Increasing Your Faith at Holy Family
At the Episcopal Church
of the Holy Family on Sun
day, August 13 at 8 a.m. and
10:30 a.m. the Rev. George
Yandell will preach on
Matthew’s Gospel in which
over and over Jesus urges his
disciples toward increased
faith. Jesus praises those he
cures with the words, “Your
faith has healed you.” He
chides the disciples by ad
dressing them as “you of lit
tle faith.”
Jesus and his disciples are
on the east side of the sea of
Galilee, the Romanized re
gion of the Decapolis, the 10
cities mostly populated by
non-Jews. The feeding of the
5000 has just taken place.
Jesus sends his colleagues
across the sea to Galilee
without him. He then goes
up onto a mountain to pray.
About 4:00 in the morning,
Jesus comes walking across
the churning sea to the boat.
His friends are terrified,
thinking him to be a ghost.
Jesus speaks, “Take heart, it
is I. Do not be afraid.”

Peter thinks it may not re
ally be Jesus, so he tests
Jesus, “Command me to
come to you on the water.”
But coming near Jesus, Peter
gets frightened and begins to
sink, the waves raging
around them. Jesus reaches
out his hand, catches Peter,
chastises him for doubting,
and they climb into the boat.
Immediately the wind ceases
blowing. His companions
then worship him, exclaim
ing, “This is it! You are God’s
Son for sure!”

La Buena Fe Cafe
On Saturday, August
19th, Hope Lutheran
Church, 3295 Old Highway
5 South Ellijay, is having a
dinner from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. traditionally called “La
Buena Fe Cafe.”
The meal is held each
year in August to help raise
funds for Hope members
Jim and Katy Beno and
their son, pediatrician Dr.
Lucas Beno, who make a
medical mission trip each
year to villages in the hills
of Honduras.
The money raised is
used to purchase medicine,
medical supplies and school
supplies for the children
served.
The menu has a “South
of the Border” flavor and all
in the community are in
vited to come and enjoy the
delicious meal. There will
be a bake sale as well.
There’s plenty of park
ing at the church and the
meal and bake sale will be
held downstairs in the
church’s fellowship hall.
For more information, call
the church at 706-636-

Minister’s
Corner
You Can Be
A Saint
Minister’s Corner

“Draw near to God,
and He will draw’ near to
you. Cleanse your hands,
sinners, and purify your
hearts, double-mined peo
ple. ” CSB James 4:8
Life is difficult and
stuff happens to each of
us. But how to you react
or what do you do when
stuff happens? Do you
fuss, blame, complain or
do you look to God for
guidance, solace and spir
itual inner presence.
I ran across a defini
tion of a saint that has
stuck with me across the
years. They wrote, “a
saint is a person who re
tains their contact with
God when stuff happens.”
Although the surround
ings shutter and the walls
wobble the ‘saintly” foun
dation of God’s presence
secures the situation. It is
not about why or how one
gets in a situation but
rather how one reacts to
the experience.
James is promising
people in his day and in
ours that if we ’’draw near
to God” in situations “He
will draw near to us.” He
wants us to look to God
and not the world for
meaning. It is being
“saintly” when one looks
to God in their daily lives

I f we want to have a closer relationship with God—and we should want
this above all else—it is important to create the time and space
necessary to do so. In much the same way that a new exercise or
study regimen will probably require a change in our schedule, if we want
to be a more spiritual person, we must carve out the time and space
necessary for it. In our busy lives this usually entails finding time (and
space) at the beginning or end of our day, since the middle of our day is
usually filled up with work or school or taking care of family. God won’t
force his way into our lives. If we want more of God in our lives, we
should create the time and space for that to happen. There is a good
reason why most monks start their days early—it’s the only time that
they aren’t likely to be interrupted by life’s other necessities. It is also
important that the space where you pray or meditate be conducive to it.
A quiet comfortable corner of a room is all that is necessary. Find some
quiet time and space at the start or end of each day to make room for
God in your life. - Christopher Simon
