ATLANTA - The Georgia
Senate will take up legisla
tion this winter aimed at pro
tecting teenagers from
cyberbullying and other neg
ative effects of social media
use.
“So many bad actors now
are targeting our children,”
Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who pre
sides over the Senate, said
Monday during a news con
ference. “People perpetrating
these things we’re going to
try to hold accountable.”
Numerous studies have
found overuse of social
media to pose a significant
danger to young people, par
ticularly girls, increasing
their risk of suicide.
The proposed legislation,
which is still in development,
would require social media
companies to take concrete
steps to verify the age of their
users. Existing rules requir
ing schools to monitor bully
ing would be updated to
reflect the realities of modem
technology.
The bill also would re
quire social media companies
to remove features they know
or find to be addictive to mi
nors.
“We want to be sensitive
to the First Amendment,”
said Sen. Jason Anavitarte,
R-Dallas, chairman of the
Senate Republican Caucus,
who will serve as the bill’s
chief sponsor. “[But] we’re
making a stand here in Geor
gia. Something’s got to
change.”
Jones said the Georgia law
will be modeled after those of
states including Louisiana,
which has a law on its books
requiring social media com
panies to verify the age of
users and imposing fines
Area singers invited to

The Gilmer Arts Commu
nity Chorus will start prepa
ration for its fall season. The
chorus will begin rehearsals
at the George Link Jr. Gilmer
Arts Playhouse on Dalton

for the annual fall concert.
We wish to invite area
singers to join us. Is that you?
As a new chorus member,
you will need to arrive on
Tuesday August 22 at
6:30pm at the George Link
Jr. Gilmer Arts Playhouse for
auditions and placement in a
chorus section. Returning

hearsals August 29th with
registration at 6:30 prior to
the 7pm rehearsal starting
time.
A chorus member pays a
$20 registration fee to help
cover costs for music and
supplies for the season. If
you are experienced with
high school or college choral
groups, or sing in a church
choir, please consider joining
our chorus of music lovers
from all over the area. Our
members come from Pick
ens, Gilmer and Fannin
counties and we really enjoy
singing and preparing for our
concerts and audiences each
spring and fall.
Dress Rehearsal will be
December 2 2023 10am -
11 ;00 at Ellijay Elementary
Auditorium. The concert will
be on December 3, 2023 at
4pm at Ellijay Elementary

The Gilmer Arts Commu

multiple area conductors
with many years experience
in choral conducting and per

This season’s conductors
are Bruce Graham and
Charles Claiborne. If you
love to sing, can read music

best choral directors, come
sing with us! You will really
enjoy it!

The General Assembly
got its feet wet on the social
media issue this year, passing
legislation backed by Gov.
Brian Kemp and sponsored
by Anavitarte that bans Tik
Tok from state-owned de
vices. The bill came on the
heels of a memo Kemp is
sued late last year banning
Tik Tok, which is owned by a
Chinese company, from
phones and laptops used by
executive branch employees.
Jones said he and other
backers of the legislation
plan to reach out to social
media companies, local
school systems and parents
for ideas as they craft the bill.
The 2024 General Assem
bly session will begin Jan. 8.
