Seeking Faith at Holy Family Episcopal Church
At the Episcopal Church
of the Holy Family on Sun
day, August 20 at 8 a.m. and
10:30 a.m. the Rev. George
Yandell will preach on
Matthew 15:21-28 to con
sider how Jesus treated the
Canaanite woman who
shouted at him for her daugh
ter’s relief from a demon. Do
you hear how Jesus ignored
her? His disciples urged
Jesus to send her away be
cause she was bothering
them. Jesus seems to have
heeded them, saying, “I was
sent only to the lost sheep of
Israel.” But she knelt at
Jesus’ feet, gainsaying him
with “Yes, Lord, yet even the
dogs eat the crumbs that fall
from their master’s table.”
She persuaded Jesus to heed
her request. “Woman, great is
your faith! Let it be done for
you as you wish.” He praised
her and instantly her daughter
was healed.
In this encounter I hear a
paradigm of how Jesus en-

His paradigm moves in the
tension between Restoration
vs. Transformation- restoring
relationships vs. transform
ing those he met, creating
new relationships. Nowhere
in the Gospels does Jesus re
fuse people seeking faith.

Have You Ever
Walked On
Water?
By Max Caylor

“Shortly before dawn
Jesus went out to them,
walking on the lake. When
the disciples saw him
walking on the lake, they
were terrified. “It’s a
ghost, ” ... they cried out
in fear, but Jesus said to
them: “Take courage. It is
I. Don’t be afraid. ”
“Lord, if it’s you, ’’ Peter
replied, “tell me to come
to you on the water....’’
Then Peter got down out
of the boat, walked on the
water and came toward
Jesus... he saw the wind
he was afraid ... begin
ning to sink, cried out,
“Lord save, me! Immedi
ately Jesus reached out
his hand and caught
him. ” Matthew 14:25-31.
Unexpected storms are
part of life. Have you ever
experienced an unex

with bad news? The scrip

disciples of Jesus experi

morning storm on the Sea
of Galilee.
Their storm came after
a long trying day. It just
seems that the storms of
life come at very inoppor
tune moments.
The disciples were on
their way home crossing
the lake when a sudden

T he discipline of study is an
important part of ones
religious formation. Anyone
who is serious about religion should
take the time to study and think
about the central texts and tenets of
their religion. Study consists of
several elements, the first of which is
repetition. One rarely learns anything
on the first reading, and most books
require several readings, including
reading with commentaries or other
aids to understand what is being said.
A second element of study is
concentration, the ability to focus.
One needs to delve deeply into the
area of study without being distracted
by extraneous matters. Trying to
study while music is playing or one
has other things on ones mind
dissipates concentration. After
repeated and concentrated studying,
one should understand the subject

matter, which is the third element of
study. And finally, one needs to
reflect on what one has understood.
How does this new knowledge affect
ones life and one’s relationship with
God? The purpose of study, as with all
the spiritual disciplines, is to
transform one’s life. One shouldn’t
just study for the purpose of knowing
more facts, and certainly not for the
purpose of showing off how much one
knows, but rather to make oneself a
better person, and to have a better
understanding of one’s place in the
cosmos. — Christopher Simon
