The strong partnership be
tween Chattahoochee Tech
nical College and the Pickens
County School District was
highlighted at the August
2023 Pickens Chamber
Breakfast. This event was
held Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the
college’s Appalachian Cam
pus in downtown Jasper.
Featured speakers at the
Pickens Chamber Breakfast
included Chattahoochee Tech
President Dr. Ron Newcomb
and Pickens County School
Superintendent Dr. Travis
Thomas.
They both described how
the bond continues to grow
stronger between Chatta
hoochee Tech and Pickens
County High School.
“Our enrollment here at
the Appalachian Campus has
increased by 29 percent from
last fall,” said Dr. Newcomb.
“We anticipate a 40 to 50 per
cent increase in enrollment
for the Automotive, Carpen
try and CNA programs, and
we’re near capacity in Weld
ing and Cosmetology.”
With classes starting on
Aug. 14, Chattahoochee Tech
will welcome a record num
ber of 171 Dual Enrollment
students from Pickens High
School at the Appalachian
Campus. High school stu
dents can get a jump-start on
their college education and
career training through Geor
gia’s Dual Enrollment pro
gram. The Dual Enrollment
program gives high school

This fall will be the first
semester that Chattahoochee
Tech has offered Automotive
Technology program classes
at the Appalachian Campus
for Dual Enrollment students
from Pickens High School.
“There was a demand for
this, and Chattahoochee Tech
hired faculty based on the
needs of our students,” said
Dr. Thomas. “And that illus
trates how well they listened
to us, and how well the part
nership exists. We’re grateful
for the collaboration with
Chattahoochee Tech. Our
students and our families will
benefit from this collabora
tion.”

American Legion Post elects officers
Jasper Post 149 of the American Legion recently elected officers for their new year.
They are: Financial Officer David Jones, Judge Advocate Hartford Field, Vice Com
mander Homer Sewell, Post Commander Jay Misback, District Commander GaryS. Ely,
Outgoing Commander Ray Smith, Second Vice James Anderson, Sergeant at Arms Jim
Elrod and Chaplain Rick Rice.
The veteran group meets on second Saturdays at 10 a.m. behind the Mountain Edu

The Jasper Sequoyah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented
"Quilts of Valor " to two local veterans last Saturday. The quilts serve as a symbolic "thank
you "for serving the nation.
The presenting group included Post 149 Commander Jay Misback, recipient Sergeant
Homer "Abe” Sewell III, DAR Regent Suzanne Harman, recipient CPO James D. An
derson, Carole English, DAR and Barbie Misback DAR. Carole English and Kathy Burke
were the quitters. The DAR is a women's lineage based organization which supports pa
triotism, education and historic preservation.

Piedmont Mountainside
Hospital is one of just nine
Georgia hospitals to receive
an overall five-star rating
from the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Serv
ices for excellence in quality.
The five-star designation
was awarded to 483 hospitals
across the country, a little
more than 10 percent of all
U.S. hospitals. CMS assigns
its star ratings annually to
hospitals nationwide. Hospi

within five broad categories:
Mortality, which looks at
death rates for various ill
nesses and conditions.

$2.7M in refunds
credit to be on

Amicalola EMC mem
bers are more than just
consumers, they own the
company. As a member-
owner of a not-for-profit
electric cooperative, each
year members are as
signed any monies col
lected in excess of
operating costs. When fi
nancial conditions permit,
the board authorizes a re
fund of these monies.
This year, the board
will allocate a $2.7 mil
lion refund for members
who had electric service
during the year 2003.
This means that capital
credits have been returned
to Amicalola EMC mem
bers for each year from
1940 through 2003 - 63
years of capital credit re
funds.
Individual refunds are
based upon the amount of
electricity purchased dur
ing the specified year. If
you were a member in
2003, and still have an ac
tive account, look for a
credit on your September
electric bill. Other refunds
will be sent by check pro
vided we have a current
mailing address.

metrics such as the percent
age of healthcare workers
who took the flu and COVID-
19 vaccines, patients who left
the emergency department
before being seen, and pa
tients who arrives with stroke
symptoms who received
timely brain scan results.
According to
Medicare.gov, the star ratings
can give the public informa
tion and help them compare
hospitals locally and nation
wide, but it says people
“should consider a variety of
factors when choosing a hos
pital, like physician guidance
about your care plan.”
The website suggests ad
ditionally looking at other as
pects of hospital quality such
as rates of infection and com
plications, and patients’ expe
rience based on survey
results.
