Big Canoe Chapel announces concert series
First Music in the Mountains will feature
Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet

The music ministry at Big
Canoe Chapel has estab
lished a new concert series at
the chapel, Music in the
Mountains. These free con
certs are Sundays at 4 p.m. at
the chapel, 226 Wolfscratch
Village Circle, Big Canoe.
Under the direction of
Music Director Dr. Samuel
Holmes, the concerts are or
ganized by Dr. Calvert John
son, keyboard accompanist at
the chapel. Persons from out
side Big Canoe need to in
form the gatekeepers that
they are attending these con
certs.
The series opens with
the Atlanta Symphony
Brass Quintet on Sunday
September 24, 2023.
The members of the quin
tet are Michael Tiscione and
Mark Maliniak, trumpets;
Kimberly Gilman, French
horn; Nathan Zgonc, trom
bone; and Michael Moore,
tuba and artistic director.
Joining the quintet on a few
compositions is Calvert
Johnson, organist at the
chapel.
Subsequent concerts on
the series include:
• The Peachtree String
Quartet, October 22, 2023;
• Annual Christmas con
cert with the Big Canoe
Chapel choirs and orchestra,
directed by Dr. Samuel
Holmes, Tuesday, December
12, 2023 at 7 p.m.;
• Celtic Fire, March 3,
2024 featuring Celtic instru
mental music and dance;
• Wanda Yang Temko, so
prano, and Nic Deusen, gui
tar, May 5, 2024.
The Atlanta Symphony
Brass Quintet began 52 years
ago as the “Ceremonial
Troupe” of the Atlanta Sym
phony Orchestra, having per
formed for numerous
dignitaries, including then
HRH Prince Charles.
The quintet presents an in
credibly varied repertoire,
from original transcriptions
of Renaissance and Baroque
music through theatrical
pieces and commissioned
works by Southeastern com
posers.
The Atlanta Symphony
Brass Quintet has appeared
on numerous occasions on
National Public Radio’s Per
formance Today.
The quintet provided all
the music for the Tribune
Broadcasting live worldwide
broadcast of The Search for
Scarlet, performing civil war
salon music in the State
Capitol.
In June 2004, the ASBQ
performed at the G-8 Summit
on Sea Island, Georgia for
the President of the United
States.
The ASBQ has performed
on numerous occasions at the
governor's mansion and for
dignitaries statewide.

Group members
Michael Tiscione, originally
of Monroe, NY, joined the
trumpet section of the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra during
the 2002-2003 season. He
left the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra to join the San
Francisco Symphony as sec
ond trumpet for the 2010-
2011 season and has since
returned to the orchestra,

Mark Maliniak joined
the Atlanta Symphony Or
chestra as fourth/utility trum
pet in September 2018. Mr.
Maliniak has toured both na
tionally and internationally
with The Cleveland Orches
tra, Philadelphia Orchestra,
San Francisco Symphony, In
dianapolis Symphony, and
Buffalo Philharmonic.
Kimberly Gilman joins
the Atlanta Symphony Or
chestra as 2nd horn this sea
son. Gilman comes to the
ASO from the Virginia Sym
phony Orchestra, where she
served for 10 years under
music director JoAnn Fall-
etta. During her time in Vir
ginia, Gilman was an active
solo recitalist and performed
regularly as a featured artist
with the Virginia Arts Festi
val's celebrated chamber
music series.
Nathan Zgonc joined the
trombone section of the At
lanta Symphony Orchestra in
2011 and is now the acting
principal trombone with the
ASO. Zgonc has received nu
merous awards, including
special prizewinner at the
Budapest International Trom
bone Competition and first
place at the Zellmer, Frank
Smith Memorial, and Robert
Marsteller solo competitions.
In 2009, Zgonc spent the
summer as the principal
trombone of the Seattle Sym
phony for Wagner's Ring
Cycle.
Michael Moore joined
the Atlanta Symphony Or
chestra in 1968, and at age
18, was the youngest tubist
among any major orchestra.
