Ruth’s
Remembrances
Entertainment
As I have said in the
past, we grew up with
little in the way of money
so that meant whatever
entertainment we had we
made ourselves or cost
very little.
Many times during the
summer we would go
across the road into a
wooded area and make
our playhouses, which
would really wind up
looking more like teepees
than anything. We would
use sticks to prop up
around a tree and put pine
needles on top, and leave
an opening for a door.
Sometimes we would go
behind the house and dig
out a bank, which we
would use as a playhouse.
If we could scrape to
gether a few coins, we
would put them into a jar
and dig a hole so we could
have buried treasure. Who
knows, there could be
some long-forgotten treas
ure still there.
A couple of times dur
ing the summer we would
all pile into Mama’s 1947
Chevrolet Coupe (on
which I learned to drive)
and we would all go up to
Twin Mountain Lakes to
swim. Of course, we
would have our inner
tubes on which to float,
but then again we would
swim across the lake,
sometimes swimming,
sometimes floating a
while. Mama would stand
on the docks to count
heads to make sure we
were still all there. As
long as she could count
four heads she was okay.
Most of my grandkids
had very vivid imagina
tions while they were lit
tle. Most kids now don’t
know how to use their
imagination to play. It’s all
done for them on all their
handheld devices. Of
course, how can parents
teach their children imag
inative play when they
have their heads buried
into phones and the like?

Heart of the Home
(HOTH) began many years
ago and aired in Atlanta,
Greenville, Charlotte and
many other areas under the
direction of my dear friend
Fred Windham.
A devout Christian, a
great producer and a loyal
friend together we created
magical television with
cooking and gospel music.
Sadly, my dear friend passed
away. I was devastated and
thought that was the end of
the show.
My ETC TV crew con
sists of some fine young men
and one of them stepped up
to the plate and HOTH was
reborn. Along with Tim
Christiansen came my televi
sion side kick Dwight San
ford, or as he is commonly
called, Mr. Ellijay.
A music producer, writer
and performer for over 50
years I found out he will sing
for his supper. HOTH was
back in production in a vari
ety of locations and featuring
the music of these moun
tains.
Mr. Ellijay also came with
a retro table his Mom pur
chased when he was a child.
Perfect setting for our fall
program. The cameras were
rolling and the fun begins.
Fried turnips are one of
my favorite fall dishes and
found quickly the neighbors
fall.
Being an avid golfer, our
DG has chosen as his motto
“Drive to Lead, Grow and
Serve.” Under his leader
ship, we have many opportu
nities to do just that. DG
Chapman encouraged us to
focus on increasing our dis
tricts membership this year.
One new member from each
club would be great but two
or more would be wonderful.
Let the recruiting begin.
This is a major campaign of
our International President
DR. Patti Hill who has chal
lenged all Lions to help grow
our membership worldwide
to 1.5 million by the year
2027.
Zone Chairman Robert
Lique gave us information
on the Georgia Lions Camp
in Waycross. It serves adults
and children who are visu
ally impaired. The camp is
structured to allow the
campers to enjoy rock climb
ing, fishing, boating, and
swimming, just like other
campers do.
We had a very special
evening with our Lions dig
nitaries and our much loved
DDM staff and residents.
The Jasper Lions Club
meets at 7 p.m., the 2nd and
4th Thursdays of each month
in Walker Hall at the First
Baptist Church of Jasper. We
welcome anyone who would
like to visit and consider
joining us. For more infor
mation call 706-253-LION
(5466) or email us at geor-
gialions@mac.com.
and Mr. Ellijay loved them,
too.
The first time I fried
turnips my family thought it
was fried potatoes that I had
seasoned "weird." Nope, it is
just the bounty of fall and
great flavor.
Heart of the Home is seen
on ETC TV 3 and also old
episodes are available on
YouTube. Subscribe and
keep up with the music, the
food and the fun.
FRIED TURNIPS
• Wash and peel about 6
turnips.
• Slice thin
• Red and Green Bell peppers
• Sliced onion
• Crisco. Salt and Pepper
Directions
• Heat Crisco and fill pan
with turnips, peppers and
onions.
• I cook for about 10 min
utes, turning them, and then
cover them and reduce heat
to let them finish cooking.
Check on them often and you
will know when they are
ready. Yum. Usually about 35
minutes.
• Don't try and speed up
the process just let them join
flavors and then jump out on
your plate. So good.
