Most parents have been in
an uncomfortable situation
where their child refuses to
share a toy with another child
at the playground or during a
playdate. We sit there and try
to coax our child into giving
up the item they were enjoy
ing because another child is
interested in it.
All parents want to raise
children who are generous,
good people. We find kids'
frequent fights over toys
wearing and a bit ridiculous.
After all, your son hasn't
looked at that toy in over a
year, but as soon as his little
brother (or visiting friend)
unearths it, he has to assert
immediate ownership.
In most families, the un
written policy is that children
are expected to share, or at
least take turns, with most
toys. The parent decides
when one child has had a toy
long enough, usually based
on how loud the protest is
from the sibling or friend.
While that seems expedient,
it reinforces competition be
tween siblings, dis-empowers
both children, and teaches
children that if they fuss, they
get their way. And it certainly
isn't pleasant for the parent to
constantly have to step in.
We want our child to ad
vocate for her own needs, to
respect the needs of others,
and to be able to delay grati
fication to wait for what she
wants. Right? All of which
means we need to re-think
how children ‘Team to share”
and what they leam when we
force them to share.
During the early formative
years, kids are learning how
to meet their own needs. The
concepts of sharing, lending,
and borrowing are too com
plex for young kids to under
stand. Toddlers have not yet
developed empathy and can
not see things from another
child's perspective.
The ability to share is a
developmental milestone.
Just like you wouldn’t expect
a 3-month-old to walk or a 2-
year-old to read, you can’t
expect your child to share
until they are developmen
tal^ ready to share. Most
children will not even begin
to understand the concept of
sharing until they are able to
understand that others have a
different point of view from
theirs.
Sharing is not just about
sharing your physical belong
ings. It’s not just about those
favorite blocks or doll. Shar
ing is also about sharing time,
turns, and themselves.
Kids are more likely to
think that sharing is good
when they take the initiative.
Otherwise, they’ll think of
sharing as a punishment
rather than an act of kindness
and generosity.
Kids shouldn’t feel like
they have to relinquish some
thing they value because
someone else wants it. If an
item is important to a child,
he should leam that it’s okay
to hang on to it for a bit. That
he shouldn’t always give up
what he truly wants, and that
others shouldn’t push him
around or tell him to keep
quiet.
A downside of forced
sharing is denying your child
the ability to resolve her own
social conflicts. It’s painful to
see kids in conflict because
we don’t want their feelings
hurt, especially over simple
problems. We’re inclined to
avoid conflict by forcing one
child to share the item with
the other even if she doesn’t
want to.
But take a step back and
be a moderator or a referee
instead, at least initially. So
cial conflict can be a learning
experience. As awkward or
difficult as it may be to wit
ness difficult emotions,
they’ll leam about empathy
and self-regulation more than
simply being forced to share.
It’s very helpful for adults
to model and encourage shar
ing of all kinds. Whether you
are making soup to take to
your sick neighbor or waiting
in line at the grocery store,
these are opportunities for
you to teach your child about
sharing in a natural way.
Practice taking turns at
home during day-to-day ac
tivities and in role-play. Shar
ing is a learned skill that
requires modeling. Practice
sharing so your child feels
confident in those moments -
asking kindly and waiting pa
tiently.
