To The Editor:
Fewer People
Corporate capitalism has
never been comfortable with
out a growth model. The
basic problem is that without
getting bigger a company is
always caught by the rising
fixed costs of business, in
cluding the costs of paying
the leadership and the stock
holders. If you remove the
idea of not doing more vol
ume each year, leaders in
government and business
react in panic.
Today the reoccurring
theme around the world is
that we are going to deal with
populations which are
falling. Fewer babies means
fewer workers. Fewer work
ers means fewer consumers
and fewer consumers means
less spending. These trends
are setting off alarm bells in
the government offices and
in the corporate offices
around the world.
In my opinion this is re
ally good news for people. If
the numbers of people shrink
around the world, the de
mand for raw materials
driven by the needs to feed,
clothe, and house humans
will go down some, even as
fewer people increase their
average use of raw materials.
Fewer people means a better
world, not worse.
A large and rapidly grow
ing population has terrible
impacts on the natural world
around us. We use more of
everything the more people
we have. The USA has al
ways had more land than
people. Our history is one of
using more and more of
everything as our population
increased. Since my birth 76
years ago, the population has
more than doubled and not
only that, more and more
people have moved to the
cities, and cities use a lot
more resources per person
than rural life.
Modern life demands
steel, aluminum, copper,
lithium and things like that.
We dig and disturb and send
dirt and chemicals into our
water. We burn and make
things from carbon and send
huge amounts into the envi
ronment that have been
locked up in their natural
state for millions of years.
We plow and plant and har
vest now on all the really
good soil and that depletes it
of its natural minerals so we
take natural gas and strip out
industrial fertilizer to maxi
mize yields so that we may
feed the increasing numbers
of people.
Today we may, and I re
peat, may be on the downhill
slope of fewer and fewer
people. I think that will be
good. Fewer workers means
better worker pay. Smaller
volumes means that really ef
ficient operators will have to
do a much better job at man
aging production facilities.
Corporate and political
America will need lots of re
ally smart leaders because
mistakes cannot be hidden by
the volume of ever growing
bigger.
Good times may be on our
long horizon.

calls for service every day.
The following incidents are
a few deputies respond to
each day.
Fight between brothers
A man called for a deputy
because he and his brother
got into a fight. The man
said he had taken his brother
to get him some beer and
liquor. The man said he and
his brother got into an argu
ment about the man’s dogs
and his brother hit him in the
head several times and
shoved a finger in his mouth,
and then tried to choke him.
The man said after that he
kicked his brother out of the
truck and he left him in a
ditch. The man said he did
not want to press charges.
The deputies looked for the
brother and found a liquor
bottle where the man said he
had left him. When deputies
finally spoke to the brother
he told them he had nothing
to say and nothing happened.
A wanted man was found
Deputies went to a home
to find a man who had multi
ple warrants out of Cherokee
and Cobb counties. One of
the warrants was for aggra
vated assault and false im
prisonment. When deputies
arrived at the house they saw
the man run into the house
through the back door.
Deputies went into the house
to find him. Deputies went
into a bedroom and there
were several bags of clothing
piled up around the bed.

was able to run the informa
tion on the owner of the wal
let from his license. The
deputy called the owner of
the wallet and told him the
wallet would be placed in ev
idence at the sheriff’s office
for safekeeping.
Failed to stop at a
stop sign
A deputy was on patrol
when he watched a van not
stop at a stop sign. The
deputy pulled the van over
and explained the reason for
the stop. The deputy ran the
driver’s information and it
came back that the driver had
active warrants for Pickens
and Gilmer counties. The
driver was arrested.
Driving under the
influence
A deputy was on patrol
and he saw a car that swerved
over the middle dotted line a
couple of times and then al
most hit another car in the
opposite direction. The
deputy pulled the car over
and explained why he
stopped the car. The deputy
asked the driver if he had
anything to drink and he said
he had drank three beers with
dinner. The deputy could see
the driver’s eyes were red
and glassy looking and he
could smell a strong odor of
alcohol. The deputy asked
the driver to get out of the
car. The deputy asked the
driver again if he had any
thing to drink and the driver
said he had drunk four 16-
ounce beers. The driver
agreed to do a field sobriety
test and he did not pass. The
driver was arrested for DUI.
Criminally trespassed
A businesswoman called
to report a suspicious person.
The businesswoman said she
saw a woman walking
around the property and at
tempting to open several
warehouse doors. The
woman could be seen pulling
on the locks and trying to use
the handle to open the doors.
The woman was also seen
walking through a construc
tion site. The business
woman was able to get a
description of the car the
woman was driving.
Deputies found the woman at
a gas station and asked her
about her attempts to get into
the warehouses, and the
woman told the deputy she
was looking for a furniture
store. The woman was is
sued a criminal trespass
warning and told she could
not be on that property.
Fraud
A man and woman called
a deputy about a fraud case.
The couple had a vehicle for
sale, and a buyer contacted
them about buying the vehi
cle. The buyer agreed to wire
transfer the money. The
transaction was completed
and the couple took the vehi
cle to be picked up by the
buyer. Later the bank in
formed the couple the wire
transfer was being reversed
and they could not stop it.
Missing items
A man spoke to a deputy
about things missing from his
vehicle. The man said the
vehicle had been repos
sessed. The man then paid
the amount owed and told the
company that had it he would
be there to get it when he had
free time. When the man
picked up the vehicle he was
missing some tools, head
lamp, and there was damage
done to the passenger side of
the vehicle. The man needed
a report to document the in
cident.
Criminally trespassed
A woman called for a
deputy because she wanted
her son’s girlfriend tres
passed from her property be
cause she did not want her at
her house. When the deputy
got to the house the woman
said her son and his girlfriend
had already left. The woman
said she did not like the son’s
girlfriend and she had several
incidents with her before.
The deputy then went to the
son’s home and asked about
the situation. The son said he
had a key to his mom’s house
so he went over that morning
and his girlfriend went with
him. The son said he wanted
to help out his mom a little
bit by cleaning up her house.
The son said his girlfriend
fell asleep on the couch and
after cleaning a little, he fell
asleep on the couch too.
When his mom came home
she woke them up by yelling
at them, so he and his girl
friend left. The deputy ex
plained that the girlfriend is
no longer allowed on his
mother’s property.
