Minister’s Comer
following Hamas' initial at
tack, stated that the grim
news was an answer to
prayer, given that death was
more merciful than the alter
native - torture, rape, and
worse. By the way, over half
of the population of the Gaza
Strip is under the age of 18.
Children on both sides of this
horrendous conflict are being
devoured by our adversary,
the devil.
Jesus spoke clearly re
garding His view of those
who would harm a child. "If
any offend one of these little
ones which believe in me, it
were better for him that a
millstone were hanged about
his neck, and that he were
drowned in the depth of the
sea. Woe to that man by
whom the offense comes!"
(Matthew 18.6-7) The heav
enly Defender of widows and
orphans warns us: "Take
heed that you despise not one
of these little ones; for I say
unto you, That in heaven
their angels do always behold
the face of my Father which
is in heaven. It is not the will
of your Father which is in
heaven, that one of these little
ones should perish."
(Matthew 18.10,14)
Golda Meir, a signer of Is
rael's Declaration of Inde
pendence in 1948 and Prime
Minister during the Yom Kip-
pur War of 1973, once stated:
‘‘When peace comes we will
perhaps in time be able to
forgive the Arabs for killing
our sons, but it will be harder
for us to forgive them for
having forced us to kill their
sons. Peace will come when
the Arabs will love their chil
dren more than they hate us.”
Pray for the peace of
Jerusalem.
Examine your true allegiance at
Holy Family
At the Episcopal Church of the Holy Fam
ily on Sunday, October 22 at 8 and 10:30
a.m. the Rev. George Yandell will preach on
the Imperial Tax to Ceasar. Why don’t you
pull out a coin or bill? What do you see?
[LIBERTY- & In God we trust] & [e pluribus
unum= out of many, one] & whose images?
// The inscriptions & images kind of tell our
story as a nation, don’t they?
When the Pharisees got supporters of
Herod’s ride to join with them in trapping
Jesus, they displayed the denarius used for
buying & selling, & paying taxes- steep taxes
(Matthew 22: 15-22). The typical denarius of
Tiberius Caesar’s day had his portrait on the
front side with the saying “Great High priest”
above his head, & the Latin inscription
“Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Son of the Divine
Augustus” on the reverse side. The coins of
Rome told the story of their ride- the Emperor
is God, & High Priest. That was the collision
point. The people with Jesus in the temple
saw something much more than a coin. They
saw the symbol of their oppression, their
poverty, their lack of meaningful work. His
followers didn’t have two coins to rub to
gether, so they might have laughed when
Jesus suggested they give their due to Em
peror Tiberius. But more than that, he chal
lenged the Pharisees & Herod’s supporters to
examine where their true allegiance lay.
George Yandell was called by the vestry
in July 2012 as Rector having served as
October 8 Blessing of the Animals at Holy
Family
Priest-in-Charge at Holy Family since August
1, 2010. He came from Calvary Episcopal
Church in Memphis, Tennessee where he
served as Senior Associate to the Rector for
eight years. Ordained for 43 years, George
has served churches in Georgia, Tennessee,
Arkansas, and Texas.

Measuring growth at Fellowship
Presbyterian
It’s amazing to watch the
marks we make and date on
our kitchen cupboard to
measure our children’s
growth. Their growth isn’t
steady but marked by spurts
and stops. We encourage
them to eat the right foods
and get a lot of exercise so
they can grow physically
strong and healthy. We are
diligent in monitoring their
beliefs and attitudes for their
character development as
well. But how do we measure
growth in our church?
During our 10 o’clock
worship service this past
Sunday Pastor Blake Hudson
shared “Growing Deeper” his
second sermon in a series
bringing fresh insights into
the results of our recently
completed Vision Frame in
ternal evaluation and sharper
focus. Outcomes included a
sharper Mission Statement,
Values, Strategy and even
ways to Measure our spiritual
growth and transformation.
None of these measures are
numerical.
Pastor Blake reminds us
that Jesus never calls us to
stay the same. He calls us to
grow, to do more than just
survive. God never stops
calling us to be more like
Jesus. Accepting Jesus as our
Lord and Savior is only the
beginning for us. Small influ
ences produce cumulative af
fects. For their character
development we must be dili
gent about our childrens’
choices of movies, tv, music,
websites, friendships, etc.
which form their view of the
world. Feeding our own spir
itual growth and maturity and
that of everyone who comes
to Fellowship Presbyterian or
encounters one of our mem
bers is our foremost measure.

October 15-October 21
October 15 th:
On this day in 1884, Providence Grays
pitcher, Charles Radbourn, became the only
hurler in major league history to compile 60
wins in a season. The “Old Hoss” reached
this milestone following an 8-0 win over the
Philadelphia Quakers. Radbourn earned the
Triple Crown that year after finishing as the
league leader for victories, earned run aver
age and strikeouts.
October 16th:
On this day in 1983, the Baltimore Orioles
won the World Series with a five-game vic
tory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The O’s
clinched the series by blanking the Phils, 5-
0, at Veterans Stadium. Baltimore pitcher,
Scott McGregor, had himself a complete-
game shutout, allowing five hits with two
baserunners. McGregor also struck out six of
the 33 batters he faced. First baseman, Eddie
Murray, had a pair of homers before finishing
three for four. Catcher, Rick Dempsey, went
two for three while adding a third inning solo
shot and scoring twice. Dempsey earned
MVP honors after logging a 0.385 average
with five extra-base hits, including four dou
bles, and two RBIs.
October 17th:
On this day in 1920, the Decatur Staleys,
who later became known as the Chicago
Bears, played their first-ever all-league foot
ball game. Decatur hosted the Rock Island In
dependents and this matchup took place after
the Staleys faced amateur competition in their
first two games. Jimmy Conzelman’s 43-yard
scoring run was the only score of the contest
as Decatur won a 7-0 shutout.
October 18th:
On this day in 1924, University of Illinois
halfback, Red Grange, had the greatest per
formance of his college football career. This
outing came against the defending national
champion Michigan Wolverines and Grange
scored six touchdowns while making two in
terceptions. Four of those scores came in the
first half, where he returned the opening kick
off 95 yards to the end zone. He also added a
trio of scoring runs, which came from 67, 56
and 44 yards out, respectively. The second
half saw Grange run for an 11 -yard touch
down and throw a 20-yard scoring pass. Just
like that, Michigan got upended, 39-14.
October 19th:
On this day one year ago, Philadelphia
Phillies pitcher, Aaron Nola, and San Diego
Padres catcher, Austin Nola, became the first
hurler/batter sibling duo to face off as post
season opponents. It was the second game of
the NLCS, which took place at San Diego’s
Petco Park. Aaron made the start for the vis
iting Phils and responded with three scoreless
frames. However, the tables turned for good
after Austin tagged his younger brother for an
RBI-single in the fifth. This began a string of
five unanswered runs in that inning and the
Padres never looked back in the 8-5 win. San
Diego’s victory tied the series, but Philadel
phia won the next three meetings before tak
ing the pennant.
October 20th:
On this day in 1984, New York Islanders
right winger, Mike Bossy, registered his 30th
career-hat trick during an 8-3 blowout of the
Los Angeles Kings. The Boss Man scored
twice in the opening period before finishing
with four goals and three assists. New York
put LA away with three unanswered netters
in the third.
October 21st:
On this day in 1976, the New York Knicks
organization honored Willis Reed by retiring
his number 19. Reed spent his entire NBA ca
reer with the Knicks from 1964 until 1974
and his digits were the first to be retired by
the franchise. The former center racked up
12,183 points, 8,414 rebounds and 1,186 as
sists. He became a member of the Naismith
Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.

this race. Stage 2 was the
weakest portion of the race as
it had the least amount of
passing.
After the start of the Stage 3,
Bell, Chastain, Keselowski,
and Larson battled each other
up front and all within one
second of each other. Despite
the dirty air issues, it still was
a fun battle up front. The fin
ish was a classic NASCAR
finish with Larson’s car start
ing to fall off, letting Bell
close in on him fast, and end
ing with a very close finish
between the two. Larson win
ning this race now means his
team can focus the next two
weeks on preparing their car
for the championship race,
which means Larson may be
the favorite for the champi
onship now.
