Friends of Pickens Library Book Donation
on Serve Pickens Day, October 21st
Waking each morning to
glorious cooling weather,
beautiful mountain views,
along with a quiet, slowed-
down lifestyle makes me
mindful of my favorite sea
son and how fortunate I am
to be spending autumn in
Pickens County Georgia.
While none of us can take
credit for the weather or
mountain views, each of us
can choose where we live
and how to make it a more
desirable home for all resi
dents. On October 21 we will
have an opportunity to take
part in the annual Serve Pick
ens Day event. This is a
chance to give back, pay it
forward or use your special
talents to make a difference
right in your own backyard.
The Friends of Pickens Li
brary is one of the many
non-profit service organiza
tions that will be using com
munity volunteers to aid
with Serve Pickens projects.
Our book donation cam
paign will be Saturday, Oc
tober 21 from 10 a.m. - 2
p.m. at the Pickens County
Library, and everyone can
take part.
Tired of using a pile of
novels as a doorstop, a stack
of poetry as a replacement
leg for your broken dining
room table, a mountain of
mysteries as a bedside table?
The Friends of Pickens Li
brary have a deal for you.
Simply box up those books
you have enjoyed through
the spring and summer and
bring them to the library as
your donation.
We love quality books in
good condition, and prefer
hardback fiction and nonfic
tion, paperback fiction,
young adult and children’s
books.
Please no textbooks, ref
erence books such as ency
clopedias, dictionaries or
thesaurus, cookbooks, or
travel guides. If the books
are soiled and yellowed, we
ask that you recycle them.
These books will be used
for our upcoming public sale
on November 3rd and 4th
with all proceeds going di
rectly to our local library.
You will find more spe
cific information on our
Facebook page and website

Ruth’s
Remembrances
Who are you?
Have you ever run into
someone you thought you
knew but wasn’t sure? Back
when we were required to
wear masks this was really
difficult when all you could
see was from the eyes up.
What’s really awkward?
Having someone come up
to you, speaking as if they
knew you, when clearly
you don’t know who they
are until as they go away
they say, “Good to see you
Ruth!” Then again, maybe I
do.
Not long ago I was at the
funeral home when I saw a
lady who I had seen several
times. She looked awfully
familiar but I could not
think from where I knew
her. Each time I had seen
her we had exchanged
pleasantries. This time I
was determined to find out
who she was. but did I ask
her myself? No. I took the
cowardly way out and sent
someone to find out for me.
They sent her to me. Turns
out she had been my grand
son’s preschool teacher
about six years ago.
The really bad times are
when you come across
someone and the conversa
tion is something like this:
“Hey, Ruth.” He can tell I
have a blank look on my
face. “Don’t know me,
huh? We graduated to
gether.” He had to tell me
his name. From then on,
you better believe I knew
him.
Speaking of classmates,
many years ago I attended a
class reunion. About a week
later Tommy Lindsey, who
is generally our master of
ceremony, remarked that he
hated that I didn’t get to
come. I said, “But Tommy I
was there!” So at the next
reunion when Tommy
asked if anyone wanted to
speak, I raised my hand and
said “I do.” Everyone was
shocked because I was very
shy and not prone to be out
spoken in school. I just said,
“I want to be sure Tommy
knew I was here.”
Maybe we should do
that more often. Let people
know we are here.

Shrimp and Grits
• Prepare grits as directed in package. I use a 2 quart pan
for this recipe.
• When grits are almost finished cooking 5 min grits, I
add half a block of creamed cheese and 4 ounces of Velveeta
cheese.
• Then add a can of original Rotel tomatoes.
•Add salt and pepper to taste.
• While grits are getting to know the cheeses I take the
thawed shrimp and remove tails.
• Even though it is already cooked I saute in butter for about
2 minutes.
• Stir into grits and cheeses and serve.
Made two rounds of it this weekend.
Perfect for cold weather.
