Class of 56 holds reunion
September 30, 2023 was a nice day, espe
cially for the Pickens County High School
Class of 1956. It was our 67th class reunion.
Everyone was so happy to see each other. We
met at Pueblos Restaurant at 1 o’clock.
Bobby Mullinax welcomed everyone with a
short talk and then as only Bobby can do,
said a wonderful blessing. We ordered our
food and continued visiting with each other.
Some of our classmates missed the reunion
because of health issues. We sent cards to
these members hoping to cheer them up and
to let them know they were missed.
After we finished eating it was time for a
group picture. Bill Cain out did himself this
year. He was snapping pictures from the time
we got there until the group picture at the
end. He made a wonderful video and sent to
each classmate that had a email address. He
added the music to the video and used the
song “The Class of 57” by The Statlers. Of
course since we were the Class of 56 we all
remembered the song and loved it. A Big
“thank you” to Bill and a wonderful video.
A great surprise.
Those attending were Patsy Payne Ben
son, Frances Parker Brace and Deborah, Mil
lie Quinton Cain and Bill, Janet Johnson
Carpenter, Bill Collins, Max Jones, Tommy
Massey, Bobby Mullinax and Frances, Rhoda
Pool Neighbors, Sam Orr, Sue Blackwell
Tatum, Barbara Prather Wood.

Ruth’s Remembrances
Technology
As anyone who knows
me knows that I am, as I
have termed it, “technolog
ically disadvantaged. I will
even tell anyone who gets
behind me in the grocery
store checkout aisle, “Don’t
get behind me. There will
probably be a glitch at the
register.” I didn’t even have
a debit card until about 10
years ago. I got one at the
urging of my sister-in-law.
We only got internet
service at our house back in
2021 when the grandkids
were at our house working
online due to covid. Don’t
expect me to text you, I like
to, as they ad says, “Reach
out and touch someone”
with an old-fashioned call.
I remember several years
ago, I needed to check-up
on one of our kids and of
course I called her. I told
her that I could tell from the
sound of her voice how she
was doing. You can’t do
that through texting.
Back in the 70s we were
on a party line. You could
really get caught up on the
neighborhood news. You
also couldn’t tie up the
phone because other people
needed it. Our phone was
on the wall with about two
feet of cord that you could
stretch and still cook dinner.
I remember back then of
hearing that in the future
you would even be able to
see to whom you were talk
ing. I thought, “Now who
would want to do that?”
I have relented and own
a cell phone, which I only
use while on the road in
case of emergency. We still
keep our house phone as
our main number. Most
people now, our kids in
cluded, only have cell
phone numbers.
Even in high school we
had the old-fashioned man
ual typewriter until the 12th
grade when we were intro
duced to the all-new electric
typewriter. We didn’t have
enough to go around so we
had to take turns on the
electric. I conveniently
would sometimes skip my
turn at that confounded fast
typewriter. Don’t get me
wrong, I loved to type and
still do if given the chance.
Of course now the term is
keyboarding. See, I am
learning.
So I’m technologically
disadvantaged. I’ve learned
to be happy with who I am
and who I’m not.

Cornbread Cake
WARNING. Do not make this if it is cold or gloomy day.
You will drink coffee and eat the whole thing before you
know it.
A dear friend sent me this recipe many years ago. Lawdy
me it is good. When I made my first one I just thought it
was pretty good but next time was on a cold winter day and
it soon became comfort food with coffee.
Sweet memory of my precious viewers who shared their
heart with me. Joyce Kerns was a dear soul and I sure miss
her. Enjoy this yummy, crunchy little bit of goodness with
cold glass of milk or hot cup of coffee.
