Bubbles, Hugs and Carols at Fellowship Presbyterian
Laughter, hugs and good
stories of adults and children
fill the air whenever mem
bers and guests of Fellowship
Presbyterians gather. All this
plus food was transported to
a lakeside setting when the
annual picnic blossomed
under the pavilion at Lake
Tamarack. Children’s hand-
blown soap bubbles were still
floating about when gener
ously served plates of warm
barbecue, potato salad, baked
beans and homemade recipes
were being shared. The large
cake decorated to celebrate
FPC’s 40th anniversary was
a feast for the eyes and the
taste buds.
Welcome to the seven
adults and children who
chose to become new mem
bers of FPC following last
week’s informative New
Member Class led by Pastor
Everyone enjoyed good food and good times at Fellowship Presbyterian’s annual picnic.
Blake Fludson. Later this
month they will be reviewed
by the elders of our Session,
then presented to the congre
gation during worship serv
ice. We are eager to see how
God will inspire these new
members to enrich the fabric
of our congregation even
more.
Perhaps for you the joy of
singing carols and hymns is
an irreplaceable part of
Christmas. At FPC there is
already a beehive of activities
with the approach of Advent.
A key part is our Chancel
Choir now practicing the
Christmas Cantata “Love
Came Down at Christmas” to
be presented Sunday, Decem
ber 10. This composition in
cludes a collection of familiar
carols and songs that will
brighten Christmas for every
one. You are invited to come
during this season and make
the joy of singing carols a
part of your Christmas this
year. No long term commit
ment rechoired. Rehearsals
are Sunday evenings 4-5:30
pm and Wednesdays 6:30-8
p.m.
If you have told yourself
“I ought to go back to church
one day”, make that day this
Sunday. Our worship service
is at 10 a.m. You will be wel
comed.

What does
Jesus look
like?
By Terry Burress
Northside Church of
Christ
We have all seen por
traits of some artist’s con
ception of what Jesus
supposedly looked like.
Some people claim to
have seen His image in a
tree trunk or piece of
burnt toast. Yet the Bible
says little of His physical
appearance, except that
He was not beautiful that
we should desire Him,
Isaiah 53:2.
There were no photog
raphers in the first century
A.D. There might have
been sketch artists but if
any made a likeness of
His image it has not sur
vived. The Bible also
shows us that people who
are beautiful on the out
side may not be so pretty
on the inside. King David
had a son named Absalom
who was known in all Is
rael for his good looks,
from the crown of his
head to the sole of his foot
there was no blemish in
him, 2 Samuel 14:25. But
looks can be deceiving
and he rebelled against his
father and tried to take the
throne is Israel by force
rather than waiting to as
cend by natural succes
sion.
A person’s character
and behavior is much
more important than their
looks. Jesus is described
and known for what He
did and said rather than

Someone recently remarked, in jest, that he was going to Hell after telling a joke that was a
bit indelicate, even if it wasn't exactly blasphemous. His remark got me thinking about the
ultimate destination of our souls, and what we ought to think and profess about that. There
are some who say we should profess a high degree of certainty about going to heaven,
perhaps in the hope that believing it strongly enough might make it true, or perhaps just in
the hope that we can raise the bar a bit on our morals by professing that we are future saints.
St. Paul tells us that we are saved by faith rather than by works, but he is quick to add that
we shouldn't boast. (Romans 3: 26-27) Who is so sure of their own faith, after all? Isn't it
God's job to examine our hearts and decide whether we are going to heaven or not, and isn't
the more humble approach to say that we just don't know, and should not presume to decide
for God? It certainly isn't obvious that any of us deserves eternal bliss, or that our professions
of faith will grant us instant entry into heaven. Since all have sinned and fallen short,
perhaps the more honest and humble approach would be to say that we just don't know
where we're going, but that we certainly hope we're going to heaven.
- Christopher Simon
