Friends of Pickens Library announce
Fall Recycled Book Sale this week
Submitted by Friends
of the Library
We have all heard the say
ing “You can’t judge a book
by its cover;” however, many
times that is exactly the way
I have chosen books that be
came some of my favorite
reads.
The outside appearance
does not necessarily reflect
the inside quality found in a
book, package, or human
being.
The Friends of Pickens
Library, while trying not to
be judgmental, have found
that our county’s residents
are outstanding readers. This
is evidenced by the quantity
and quality of donated litera
ture authored by popular
writers, timeless classics, and
simply beautiful books.
We want to offer everyone
the opportunity to share in
the bounty of these recycled
treasures.
Our Fall Book Sale will
be Thursday, November 2nd
through Saturday, November
4th at the Pickens County Li
brary in Jasper. Members of
FOPL only will benefit from
the private presale on Thurs
day, 4 - 6 p.m. The public
sale will be Friday and Satur
day 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This fall
sale complements our contin
uous Books Sales area in the
library which is available to
all patrons during regular li
brary hours.
We will offer what we feel
is our best collections, series
and single volumes of hard
back fiction and nonfiction
for all ages. You will also
find a substantial supply of
quality paperbacks in excel
lent condition covering a va
riety of genres appealing to
all readers. As always, our
children’s and young readers'
sale areas will be well
stocked.
We strive to make this an
enjoyable experience as well
as providing great merchan
dise at affordable prices.
Cash or credit will be ac
cepted for your convenience.

sales and other benefits of

“It’s all about enriching seniors lives,”
says new Pickens Senior Center director

New Pickens County Senior Center Director Irene
North, left, is replacing outgoing director Lenise Bruce,
right. North wants to create a space that helps seniors stay
active, social, healthy and independent.

Irene North has worked
with seniors in the past, but
in her new role as Pickens
County Senior Center direc
tor she will work with them
in a different capacity.
“It’s about enriching sen
iors’ lives and providing ac
tivities they can benefit from,
and having them socialize
and make friends,” said
North, who ran her own
cleaning business and also
taught athletic classes Silver
Sneakers and Zumba for sen
iors in Ellijay before she took
the position. “I love being
here and seeing their smiling
faces, and they all have their
unique stories they tell.
North has lived a very ac
tive life as a runner who par
ticipated in road races, and
was a dancer and fitness in
structor until she injured her
knee and was forced to get a
knee replacement surgery in
February.
“My life took a turn,” she
said. “I was hard on my body,
the high-impact with the run
ning and dancing.”
North is slowly getting
back to physical activity, but
isn’t quite at the level she
once was. In her new posi
tion she still works with sen
iors, but will develop and
manage daily activities and
workshops, and also keep up
with programs they offer like
Meals on Wheels, the free
hot lunch served at the center
every day, as well as other
tasks. North has been in the
position around four weeks
and is training with outgoing
center director Lenise Bruce,
who is taking a position with
North Georgia Community
Action Center (NGCAC).
NGCAC oversees seven
senior centers in the region,
and offers other services like
heating and cooling assis
tance and the M.A.T.S. pub
lic transportation system.
The senior center (adja
cent to Lee Newton Park)
currently has 52 active mem
bers, with around 40 seniors
who have lunches delivered
through the Meals on Wheels
programs. Any senior is in
vited to come any day of the
week and all services - in
cluding the hot daily lunch
served at 11 a.m. - are free.
“We have programs every
day,” North said. “Mondays
are the busiest for sure.
That’s BINGO day and they
love BINGO.”
Other programs include
crafts, regular presentations
from a UGA extension per
son about healthy farm-to-
table food choices, yoga,
talks from a pharmacist,
games, bean bag toss, walks
in the park, and more to
come. North wants to imple
ment music and dance as
well. There are special events
for holidays, like the holiday
portraits that will be taken on
November 2.
The director is also open
to ideas from people who
might want to come give a
presentation, do a craft class
or workshop, or who has
other ideas that would be fun
and engaging for seniors.
“We’re always looking for
volunteers for the Meals-on-
Wheels program too,” she
said.
The center has a library,
gym, and computer access as
well.
“We would love for sen
iors to come and see what we
are all about, just spend the
day with us,” North said.
“Like I said what we do is all
about enhancing their lives.”
The Pickens County Sen
ior Center is open Monday -
Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They
are located at 400 Stegall
Drive.
Transportation can be
arranged through the
M.A.T.S. bus service by con
tacting 706-692-3252. Fees
are $2 for one-way trips up to
10 miles; $3 for one-way
