POISON AND SLH IDE.
Hello Plain, Iowa, Feb. 15.—A ter¬
rible tragedy has just been enacted
here. Janies burns was arrested on a
charge of attempting to po.sou certain
persons in the family where lie was
boarding. It was alleged that live at¬
tempts had been made. On Saturday
one of the family saw him put some¬
thing, supposed to be strychnine, in
the teapot when it was being placid
on the table- Subsequently l»e was
arrested and pleaded not guilty and
was bouud over in five hundred dollars
to appear for trial tomorrow. Later
the citizens diseased the matter and
demanded that furtln r seouri ty be giv¬
en for his appearance. lie was rc-ar*
rested and his bond fixed at $2:000,
winch was given. To day he went to
a relative in the country near by^aud,

Levels, a vi/lage in Hampotiire county
is agitated over the discovery that a
young lady named Mary Cox, wh* was
iuterevl in the village graveyard last
week, wag alive when buried- M i>e
Cox was the acknowledged belt* of
the village a.*.d the child of a wealthy
father. She was recently takj ill
with acute neuralgia of the stoma die
Morphine in large doses to he given
at interva/s of six hours, was prescri¬
bed. By mistake two doses *rere ad¬
ministered so dote together that they
produced a stupor so like death that
Miss Cox was robed for the grave. No
physician living near, none was sum¬
moned, and the body was committed
to the grave. A young la iy associate
of Miss Cox’s said at the funeral that
