HONOR. R'ritten For the Jasper News by X. Y. Z. To be esteemed of men is a commen dable desire; and next to riches is the ruling passion vf life. Tt is in fact to this end that most men desire riches. That position in life, however , which in the mere contingancy of wealth, will not repay tho effort necessary to acquire it. To he truly esteemed of* men is to be tho possessor of qualities which money can not buy. To be wor¬ thy of that esteem in the highest so¬ cial position attainable in this life. How shall it be reached? Every body has heard that, t‘honesty is tbe best poli¬ cy”, and the truth of the maxim is substantiated in every phase of human history; but it* no higher morel ground than this were possible, we should dis pair of ever witnessing a correct stan¬ dard of honor. Honesty which springs from motive of policy, deserves not the name. I; is akin to that bastard friendship Lt go/tmi of selfishness, and is not entitled it place on the iist of virtues, To be truly honorable, aii aotiou must spring ? frmiij,urc^-.,nyc 5 -, »nil priucipie,. cat. ret uuly »u <~rre«t Correct principles alone can produce that noblest work of God—an honest man. But how is one to judge of cor¬ rect principles? We might auswer niost would, go fo the Bible. The answer would hot be amiss, and yet, there is planted within every human breast a little monitor the pure in¬ stincts of which are as unerring as troth itself. An appeal to conscience wdl invariably settle ihc Jittte 'per¬ plexing question, which sometimes *>eot<iacs so iuwraugiit. in tbe very eon^ stituuon of moral actioiis as to threat¬ en tne utter destruction of all safe¬ guards. it is through /itc neglect of this ap¬ peal that so tunny hundred** of names are yearly added to that dishonored catalogue of “ruined young lue». ^, *1 be first step iu a wrong direction is always the most diffie .it. One such 8teS, unrepented of, is a sure precours¬ er of a course of infamy. No young man, at thc beginuing of his care.-r, couly premeditates alike ail dishonor^, Hut. having ouce launched upon the tide, he is like the impotent boatman who permits his craft to drift into the rapids of Niagara. Honesty is best policy: it is as the right baud of God—a present help iu every time of need. almost a t atwl fall. From Constitution Mr. F. The va cant lot is not fenced in and is about the width of a street./The lot has been filled up to a level with the street for a distance of about thirty feet back. At that point a stone wa/i about twen¬ ty feet high had been erected.
