SLEEPY 7/OLLOJF.
Just a few miles from our quiet lit
tie Village. Jlr. Mickeal Stoner lias
one of the finest Carp Ponds in (Georgia
The Pond covers an are of 3 acres ,in
a basin formed by natures own hand
work. The uatural situation ef the
Pond causing thus very little expense
(comparatively speekiug) in its comple
tion. The dam being the greater ex
pence. It is built of very -sub
stantial wood and ro(k and is one of
most complete, I over saw. Except
one or two others in the lower part of
this State. Air Stoner built it some
three years age, and it was thought by
a great many, that he would not make
a success of carp raising as it was thoulit
that carp would not do well in this
ef the state. It is now however proven
beyond a doubt, that north Georgia is
the place for carpe raising. A few
months after completion of this great
pond; Mr Stoner purchased 350 young
carps no* more than three or four niches
in length, aud placed them in his pond.
One day last week, a very fine spec
,linen was taken from it, it weigh tad
seven pounds by actual weight,2 feet o
inches inlcngth* The fish has aver
aged about one foot a year, a growing
in length. I would like to suggest
a word to any of the readers ot the
News if thy contemplate going in the
carp raising business:
That a great deal depends on the
on the situation of the pond, and the
kind of carp it is stocked with. There
are three kinds, of carp, that I knoM,
of these are the “Scale” “minnor” aud
the Leather, of the three mentioned die
Scale is the finest, and is a splendid
table fish, prououncedby some superior
to the shad.
These fish arc very tiasilytabeu from
the pond, as they bite at a bated hook
with all the impetuosity of a Trout or
jack fish. Mr Stoner has been taking
fish from his pond for the last year and
says it has saved him considerable
money as he has agoodmaney hands
emjdoyed on his place and has lurmsu
e l them fish, instead of bacon, the fish
ueing very healthy food and so much
cheaper, than bacon as there is no.
much expence connected with the ous -

It is a good ideate have as many tree.*
growing in the pond as possible as they
are »ho means o furnishing nearly or all
the food for the fish iu the way of bugs
insect* etc that fall from them into the
water.
It is quite Interesting to stand on the
banks ef the pond those •lelightful suu
shiny days, and watch them as they
chase each oth*ir too and lro and iu
theirestacies some times leap so high
that their whole /cugths can »c seen
plainly above the water, ftr. Stoner
» thinking cf building another jmnd
shortly, and keeping the old one forthc
pleasure and benefit of his friends.
If he does I will try to get word to
some of my friends and we will make
up a fishing party and try our luck
augleing for the scaled beauties, 1
can’t imagine no better or a more pleas
ent way of having a day recreation
than to fix up o nice dinner and get
an early start and spend the day a
fishing aud lounging in the shade of the
of the beautifnf grove adjoining,
Truly yours,
