Trojans tie for fifth at state duals

out of eight teams that made the finals. Oglethorpe County
won the state title. The event drew huge crowds to the new
LC gym.

tional area championships Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
SGES launches student broadcast journalism program
and newscast, taught by Emmy-winning journalist
Students at St.
George’s Episcopal
School will make his
tory this semester with
the school’s first-ever
student-
produced
newscast.
They will
gain the
neces
sary
skills in
a new journalism course
taught by Emmy-winning
TV reporter Josie Evans.
“Students will learn
how to shoot and edit
video, write, and ulti
mately present their
reports in a bimonthly
newscast,” said Evans.
Evans, who went by
Jocelyn Connell on-air,
spent 15 years in TV
news, most recently at
CBS46 in Atlanta as an
anchor and reporter.
She’s also worked in
radio and print. She has
received multiple honors,
including two regional
Emmy awards, for her
reporting and anchoring.
“I’m excited to work
with such a terrific
group of kids. They are
smart, curious, creative,
and 1 can’t wait to see
what they achieve,” said
Evans.
The journalism class
launched in January.
The first newscast is
scheduled to air in March
and will be broadcast to
students over closed-
circuit TV.
“After having numer
ous students express
interest in this dynamic
field, we decided to take
that next step,” explained
high-school director Dr.
Blake Monts de Oca, on
why the school launched
the program. “Ultimately,
we want to give our stu
dents every competitive
advantage, and this class
will help to distinguish
them in the college appli
cation process and their
future endeavors.”
St. George’s Episco
pal School is a private,
independent school,
serving students in Prek-
3 through 12th grade.

The LC Lady Trojans
notched two region wins
last week to run their re
cord to 154 overall and
8-1 in region play. Region
3-AA standing
are all important
in that the mem
ber schools have
decided not to
have a region
tournament and
will seed for
state based on
the final region
standings.
Coach Adam Ballard’s
squad currently leads
the region and would
grab the #1 seed if that
holds.
Last Tuesday, LC went
to Dodge County and
easily avenged its only
region loss of the season
6441. Shakiria Foster led
LC with 21 points. Also
in double figures were
Tamya Blasingame with
14 and Zakiria Foster
with 12.
Other scorers were
Zaria Fletcher (7), Journi
Harris (6) and
Janiyah Akins
(6).
On Thurs
day, LC topped
Bleckley County
59-34. Shakiria
Foster again
led the scoring
with 20 points
while Blasingame had
12. Other scorers were
Zakiria Foster (8), Akins
(6), Fletcher (6), Harris
(4), Lauren Wilcher (2)
and Kadejah Lyons (1).
LC has one game this
week, a region contest at
NE Macon Friday.

The LC soccer teams
opened the 2021 season
by splitting a scrimmage
on the road at AAAAA
Locust Grove.
In the opener,
the Trojans got
scorched 9-1.
LC’s lone goal
came on a long
shot by Josh
Moore.
In the night
cap, the Lady
Trojans notched
a 4-2 win. Veteran Brit
tany Arreola had two
goals while freshmen
Samiya Smith and Armani
Flewellen had one goal
each.
Barnesville will be a
soccer hotbed this week
as the Trojan Cup tourna
ment gets underway. The
six-team field includes
Lamar, Putnam County,
Trinity Christian, Harris
County, Jones County
and Pike County.
Action got underway
Monday with LC battling
Putnam Co. and Pike
facing off with
Harris County.
Tonight the LC
teams face Trin
ity at the new
high school field
The girls play at
5:30 p.m. with
the boys to fol
low at 7:30 p.m.
At Trojan Field, Pike
and Jones go head-to-
head.
There is soccer action
all day Saturday at both
venues beginning at 9
a.m. with the title games
being played at 4 p.m.
(girls) and 6 p.m. (boys)
at Trojan Field.
Trojans split

Trojans (4-15, 2-6) split
two region games played
last week.
On Tuesday,
LC topped
Dodge County
4740 on the

BPD makes arrests
in armed robbery case
Officers and investiga
tors from the Barnesville
Police Department made
three arrests Jan. 29
in connection with an
armed robbery on Ice
Street Jan. 27 in which
an AK-47 assault rifle
was stolen. A suspect
was identified after a
review of social media
and a search warrant was
executed at 804 Pied
mont Woods apartments.
Quendavious Taylor, 21,
was arrested and found
to be in possession of the
firearm.
He will be charged
with armed robbery and
aggravated assault with
other charges pending.
Two other suspects
fled the scene but were
quickly apprehended on
Edgewood Circle. Qua-
varian Taylor, 18, and
Terrell Hart, 20, were ar
rested and charged with
obstruction.
