1B %Jje lieralti <©a?ette Tuesday, February 9,2021 SPORTS LC's Horton returns as UK strength coach Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops announced last week that Barnes- ville native and LC grad Rafael Horton would return to the program as assistant strength and conditioning coach. For the past two years, Horton was at West Virginia as assistant head coach for strength and conditioning. He has held a similar job at Troy. “I’m excited to be back at UK. To me, it’s all about the players and I’m looking forward to working and develop ing this team and, most importantly, helping them reach their goals,” Horton said. Horton is the son of Bennie and Vivadon Hor ton of Barnesville. LC basketball splits at Northeast Macon WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com In the only roundball action of last week, the LC basketball teams split games played at North east Macon Friday. In the opener, the Lady Tro jans (16-4, 9-1) solidified their hold on first place in the region with a 51- 40 win. Tamya Blasingame lit up the Raiders for 26 points to lead LC. Also in double figures was Shakiria Fos ter with 13. Other scorers were Zaria Fletcher (7), Zakiria Foster (2), Journi Harris (2) and Janiyah Akins (1). The Lady Trojans are now ranked #5 in Class AA. In the nightcap, the Trojans (5-16, 3-7) fell 90-42. CJ Allen was the only Trojan to hit double figures with 10 points. Other scorers were Alex Aberna thy (9), Ravick Talmadge (6), Ty Head (5), Josh Driver (5), Braden Ma- sionet (4) and Devin Bateman (3). LC travels to Washington County tonight and hosts SW Macon Friday in the last scheduled game of the regular season. CVCC (1-0) scored single runs in the second and third innings to build an early 2-0 lead, but GSC bounced back with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 2-1. After CVCC added an other run in the bottom of the seventh, GSC (0-1) answered with a run in the eighth inning to cut the Pirates’ advantage to 3-2. But CVCC delivered the knockout blow with the four-run eighth to seal the victory, spoil ing new GSC head coach Kent Rollins’s debut. GSC managed just two hits on the afternoon as Adam Alicea-Brooks and Carson Renz each had one. Renz’s hit came on an RBI double for the Highlanders. The Highlanders are back in action on Febru ary 12 when they travel to Southern Union State Community College (Ala.) for a doubleheader. GSC will be home for the first time on February 13 when the University of South Carolina-Salka- hatchie comes to Barnes ville for a twin bill. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. LC soccer hosts Trojan Cup tourney The annual Trojan Cup soccer tournament closed out Saturday with multiple games played at two venues here in a cold drizzle that occasionally turned to sleet. Trinity Christian beat Putnam County to win the girls’ title while Putnam County beat Harris County to take home the boys’ crown. The Trojans finished the tourney with a 1-1-1 mark. They opened the week last Monday with an 8-0 loss to Putnam. In round two, they tied Trinity Christian 2-2. Josh Moore had two goals while Justin Brannan had an assist. On Saturday, LC beat Jones County 4-0. Bran- nan and Moore had two goals each. Brannan had one assist as did Joe Davis, Jay’D Lucier and Daniel Navarro. The Lady Trojans started tour ney play with a 4-0 win over Putnam. Kaylah Grammer, Cara Bishop, Alaina Cato and Madi son Smith each had goals for LC. In round two, LC lost 5-1 to Trinity as Armani Flewellen got the lone goal for the locals. On Saturday, LC fell to Harris County 3-1. Samiya Smith got LC’s only goal. Lamar has this week to regroup before trav eling to East Laurens Friday night. LC wrestling sending huge contingent to state championships WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com The LC wrestling team hosted the area tradition- als here last Thursday and emerged with a large contingent of qualifiers for state. The state tradi tional meet begins today at the Macon Coliseum. The Trojans are sending 10 boys who won their weight clas sifications and two who finished as runners-up. The champions ad vancing (weight class) are Nathan Layton (106), Hunter Hammock (113), Sam Blevins (126), Braydon Pines (132), Elias Browning (138), Levi Banks (145), Chaz Hammock (152), Cayden Sloan (160), Travis Jones (170), and Christian Bos tic (195). Runners up advancing are Kendall Jones (182) and James Gilroy (220). Eight Lady Trojans also qualified and will go to state. They are Breanna Turner, Mariyah Zavala, Kate English, Autumn Vaughn, Geisel Williams, Elizabeth Schrieber, Leia English and Heather St. Clair. Lamar’s Daylan Cauthen (17) crashes into the Jones County keeper after a run on the net Saturday. Lamar topped Jones 4-0 and finished 1 -1 -1 in the Trojan Cup tournament.
