6B %\)t Imnlti Tuesday, March 2,2021 Kristen Roney earns Master's degree Kristen Roney ob tained her Master of Education Degree from Liberty University on December 18, 2020. Her education career began RONEY with teaching second grade at Jack- son Road Elementary in Griffin. She is currently teaching third grade at Rock Springs Christian Academy in Milner, GA, where among many other accolades, she and her class, were awarded the 2020 project funds from Southern Rivers Energy for the innovative and educational projects in her class. Kristin is married to Brennan Roney, mom to 10 year old, Cooper Roney and daughter of Kent and Joy Kingsley, all of Milner. Friends of the Library invitations sent Invitations to become a Friend of the Barnesville-Lamar County Library were mailed recently. The city and county residents have a history of supporting their library, education and literacy. That is one of the reasons living here is so desirable. You can carry on the tradition by responding to an invitation or you can stop by the circulation desk at the library. Individual memberships are $20. Corporate memberships of $300 or more receive special recognition for their generosity. Membership dues are used to fund Story-time and Book Buddies for young children, the Teen Program, the pur chase of books, and special equipment needs. Calvin Smyre was the featured lecture speaker at Gordon State College recently. Gordon State College hosted its Legacy Lecture Series on Sunday evening as Rep. Calvin Smyre from the 135th District of Georgia’s House of Representatives spoke to Highlander students via Zoom and in the Student Activity and Recreation Center Arena. “The Legacy Lecture series was started to ensure students felt empowered to continue their journey and cre ate a legacy that pro pels those coming after them,” said Dr. Kirk A. Nooks, President of Gor don State College. “Hav ing Rep. Calvin Smyre share his story was a mo ment that Gordon State College will remember for years to come.” Rep. Smyre shared many thoughts and ideas with the Highlander student body as well as numerous virtual guests that included GSC faculty and staff; Gordon State College Foundation Board of Trustees’ mem bers Dan White, Chase Idol, and Jim Edwards; and constituents such as Barnesville mayor Peter Banks and Stockbridge mayor Anthony Ford. Over 180 people attended the hybrid virtual event. “1 want to be remem bered as a person who gave of his time and en ergy in trying to make a better life for the people he represented,” said Rep. Smyre (D), who has served in the Georgia House of Representa tives since 1975. “Today, 1 represented the young people in the audience and the viewers listening. 1 represented a legacy that was created to pro vide an opportunity for all those who want to see change. “Today was important for me to share with stu dents that when oppor tunity knocks, be ready to open the door. 1 have seen many things dur ing my lifetime. If 1 have the opportunity to leave something behind, it is the opportunity to share my legacy.” GSC was also honored to have Rep. Debra Baze- more (D) from District 63 (Riverdale), Rep. Regina Lewis-Ward (D) from Dis trict 109 (McDonough) and Rep. Kim Schofield (D) from District 60 (At lanta) attend virtually. “On behalf of the student body at Gordon State College, we were very excited that Calvin Smyre was the keynote speaker this year,” said Ruben Raymond, GSC Student Government Association president. “The 2nd Annual Legacy Lecture was a great event with inspirational musi cal selections and a mo tivating speech was pre sented by Representative Calvin Smyre.
