THE HERALD GAZETTE/WALTER GEIGER
SUV takes out power pole
This was the scene on Highway 36 East March 3 when a 2013 Buick Enclave driven
westbound by Morgan Danielle Pilkenton, 24, of Griffin struck a 1998 Honda Civic which was
stopped and waiting for oncoming traffic before turning left onto Eady Creek Road. The Civic
was driven by James DeGraff, 46, of 428 Eady Creek Road. The Buick went off an embankment,
shattering a Southern Rivers Energy power pole. Neither driver was seriously hurt but traffic
was impacted for some time as the vehicles were removed and the power pole repaired. The
Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.

Bond denied in beaten baby case
FROM PAGE ONE
Action on Cof
fey’s motion for
bond was contin
ued. The next court
date is March 16
but her case is not
yet included on
that calendar.
The warrants
charge the pair
with “willfully and
maliciously” causing
the victim “cruel or
excessive pain” by
not seeking medi
cal attention for
the child in the two
weeks prior to her
being taken to the
hospital. The warrants
further read, “...Upon
medical examination of
Juvenile Nor
man, the attend
ing physician
found Juvenile
Norman to have
multiple bruises
and abrasions to
her body as well
as 27 fractures/
COFFEY bone injuries in
various stages of
healing.”
The victim
has been re
leased from the
hospital and is
recovering in
state custody.
Two other chil-
NORMAN dren living in the
couple s Milner
apartment were removed
by DFCS.
The child’s injuries
came to light after Cof
fey took her to Wellstar
Spalding Regional Hos
pital with a swollen leg.
Hospital personnel noted
the injuries and con
tacted the sheriff’s office
about alleged abuse.
This is not Norman’s
first run-in with law
enforcement. In 2019, he
was arrested for failure to
appear in court. In July,
2020 he was arrested for
theft by taking, burglary
and criminal damage to
property. Those felony
charges are still pending
in superior court.
Both Norman and Cof
fey are being held in the
Lamar County jail.
