Tuesday, March 9,2021 SPORTS #7 Lady Trojans get two region wins THE HERALD GAZETTE/WALTER GEIGER Vaughn signs with Rattlers Trojans standout Connor Vaughn signed a scholarship to continue his football career at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, West Virginia Friday. The Rattlers are coached by Travis Everhart. Vaughn was a stalwart on the offensive and defensive lines for LC and served as long snapper. Pictured are (l-r) Durwin Vaughn, Connor Vaughn, Kristy Vaughn and Dawson Vaughn. The LC Lady Trojans, ranked #7 in the latest eurosports.com Class AA poll, notched two region wins on the local soccer pitch last week. On Tuesday, LC host ed Monticello in a cold, driving rain and rolled to a 6-0 win. Freshman Cara Bishop led LC with two goals while Kaylah Gram- mer, Alaina Cato, Vanessia Byrd and Samiya Smith had one goal each. Paige Mayfield had one save in the net for Lamar. On Friday, the Lady Trojans routed Washing ton County 10-0. Bishop again had two goals as did Grammer and Samiya Smith. Scoring single goals were Cato, Byrd, Macy Smith and Maci- Lauren Lanier. Mayfield again had one save for LC. Bishop, Cato and Samiya Smith each had assists for the locals. LC travels to NE Ma con tonight and battles #6 Bleckley County on the road in Cochran Friday night. Both are region matches. Junior varsity: The Lady Trojan JV team traveled to Jones County Wednesday and won 10-0. Samiya Smith had the hat trick with three points to lead LC. Bishop and Mackenzie Sher- ritt had two goals each while Ally Bloxham, Byrd and Lanier had one goal apiece. Diamond Trojans fall to Eagles, Gryphons The LC Diamond Tro jans (1-5) dropped two non-region games in high school baseball ac tion last week. On Monday, Lamar lost a tight contest on the road at ACE 4-3. Ayden Hollis took the loss in relief of Rhett Blount. Hollis had two hits and drove in two runs. Bayle English drove in LC’s third run. Tanner Patterson added one hit for the locals. On Thursday, the Diamond Trojans hosted Crawford County and came out on the wrong end of an 11-2 score after giving up five runs ~-Jji in the top of the first. LC managed only five hits and committed four errors. LC hosted ACE Mon day and travels to Wash ington County today in region action. WACO comes here Thursday. Middle school soccer goes two for four After a two-week break due to a COV1D outbreak among the girls team that halted practice, the LCMS soc cer teams got back in action last week. On Monday, they traveled to Jackson to take on the Henderson Tigers. In the opener, the Lady Trojans fell 3-0 Four saves in goal by Ella Bleu Leverett kept things from being even worse. In the nightcap, the Trojans lost 3-1. The only goal for the locals came off the prolific foot of Caleb Miller on an assist by Hayden Cherry. On Wednes day, LCMS traveled to Macon to do battle with ACE Academy. The Tro jans opened the evening with a thrilling 3-2 win. Miller had the hat trick for the locals, scoring all three goals. Collect ing assists were Kaden Carter, Jordan Mc Intosh and Axel Garcia. Miller now has 16 goals after just five games. In the second match, Leverett scored on a header from inside the box with just under nine minutes remaining and the Lady Trojans held on for a 1-0 win over the previously undefeated Gryphons. Chelsea Roberts had two criti cal saves in the net for LCMS down the stretch. Both the Trojans and Lady Trojans are 4-1 for the season. They played host to Fort Valley Mon day and welcome Byron to the local soccer com plex Wednesday.
