April proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month April was proclaimed “Child Abuse Preven tion Awareness Month” in Lamar County by the county board of com missioners with officials of the local Department of Family and Children Services present. Com missioner Nancy Thrash read the proclamation, reading in part, “Help us celebrate the importance of social connections and join our work to strength en social well-being, a key indicator of overall health and an essential factor in preventing child abuse and neglect. DFCS director Kelly Page said the 34 pin- wheels on the court house lawn, represent documented cases of child abuse in Lamar County and “are about half of what we displayed last year,” but could be somewhat inaccurate because students were not in school where they might feel safe in report ing abuse. The shooting occurred about 12:45 a.m. in a mobile home at Lot 22 of Bedsole’s Trailer Park off Trice Road. Dep. Justyn Weaver arrived at the trailer and found 36-year-old Christian Nicole Thomas sitting on her back porch with a gunshot wound to her shoulder. Thomas told Weaver her soon to be ex-husband Alvis Thomas arrived at the trailer, tore out an air condition ing unit and got inside. A verbal alter cation ensued and Christian Thomas was shot with her own Ruger 9 mm. handgun. According to Weaver’s report, Demarco Markell Price of Stockbridge was in bed with Christian Thomas and was awak ened by the altercation. He fled to a nearby trailer and called for help. Price was unhurt. Christian Thomas was taken for treatment and is recovering. Alvis Thomas fled in a gold Ford Crown Victoria and is the subject of a manhunt. He is considered armed and dangerous. He is thought to be in the Griffin area where his car was found and has been in contact with investiga tors saying he will turn himself in but had not done so at press time Monday.
