Gordon women's soccer opens spring season
The Gordon State
College women’s soccer
team opened its 2021
spring campaign with an
emphatic victory over
Georgia Collegiate Ath
letic Association (GCAA)
rival Andrew College
here Friday night as the
Highlanders cruised 14-0.
The game began as
a cagey affair as both
teams sought to find
their legs early in the
season. As the first half
progressed, the High
landers began to assert
their dominance result
ing in six goals scored by
six different freshmen.
After the intermission,
GSC maintained their
control of the game by
pouring in eight more
goals and the end result
was a 30-shot attack that
resulted in 14 goals on 11
assists for the Highland
ers.
Freshman Sophia
Kotopka (Riverview,
Fla. / East Bay HS) led
GSC with three goals,
her first hat trick in a
Highlander uniform.
Fellow freshmen Bailey
Arnold (Bethlehem,
Ga. / Apalachee HS)
and Madison Schmuck-
er (Cape Coral, Fla. / Ida
S. Baker HS) along with
sophomore Keerston
Hambrick (Douglasville,
Ga. / Alexander HS) each
started their season with
two goals.
A quintet of freshmen
- Aniah Rasool (Ruskin,
Fla. / Lennard HS), Au
drey Pavik (Ken-
nesaw, Ga. / Harrison
HS), Emma Lovell (Tave-
nier, Fla. / Coral Shores
HS), Lourdes Tomp
kins (Stephens, Ga. /
Oglethorpe Co. HS)
and Payton Asher (Cape
Coral, Fla. / Ida S. Baker
HS) each scored for GSC
to bring the tally of goal
scorers to nine. Seven of
those nine Highlanders
also played the role of
provider as they assisted
their teammates on
goals.
Mallory McCarth-
ney (Griffin, Ga. / Spald
ing HS) maintained the
shutout in goal for GSC.
With the victory,
GSC opens the regular
season with an overall
mark of 1-0 and also 1-0
in GCAA play, which the
Highlanders will look to
build upon when they
host another GCAA foe in
Abraham Baldwin Agri
cultural College (ABAC)
on Wednesday, April 7 at
6 p.m. ET. Admission is
free and face masks are
recommended.
Diamond Trojans
can’t dodge Dodge
LCMS Trojans atop
standings
The LC Diamond Tro
jans lost 5-1 to the Dodge
County Indians March
30 at Aldora Field in the
only baseball action of
last week.
LC managed only five
hits and had two errors.
Tanner Patterson took
the loss for LC. Caden
Dewitt pitched in relief.
The Trojans are 4-12
on the season.
MGMSAL
The LCMS Trojans
notched three wins
last week to run their
record to 10-1-1. Coach
Chaz Ellerbee’s squad is
atop the Middle Georgia
Middle School Athletic
League standings with
two games left to play in
the regular season.
On March 29, the
Trojans topped ACE 4-0
behind two goals from
Axel Garcia. Caleb Miller
added a goal and an as
sist as did Kaden Carter.
Hayden Cherry also
had an assist while
Aiden Romero recorded
12 saves in goal for the
Trojans.
On April 1, LCMS got
two wins over Jones
County. The Trojans
rolled in game one 7-0.
The second match was
to play out the final 28
minutes of a match post
poned the previous week
by lightning with the
local up 1-0. LCMS won
that match 3-1.
Miller finished the
day with six goals while
Jordan McIntosh had
two. Carter and Garcia
had single goals. Carter
added two assists as did
Garrison Selph. Cherry
Markiviyon Dugger, Tan
ner Garvin and Cameron
Bloxham each had one
assist for LCMS.
In girls action, the
Lady Trojans slept
through the first 15
minutes of the match
with ACE and trailed 3-0
before closing the gap to
3-2 late in the game but
the comeback fell short.
Ava Lonberg had both
goals for the locals while
Chelsea Roberts had
three saves in goal.
On Thursday, the Lady
Trojans ripped Jones
County behind a five-
goal, breakout perfor
mance from sixth grader
M’Kenzie Smith. Lonberg
and Ella Bleu Leverett
had single goals for
LCMS. Ava Bushby had
two assists while Roberts
had one save in goal.
LCMS is off this week
for spring break. They
play at Fort Valley April
12 and host Monroe
County April 15. The top
four teams advance to
the playoffs April 17 at
Monroe County.

The Lamar County
Trojans notched two
wins last week to clinch
the Region 3AA soccer
title and a #1 seed and
home field advantage
in the state play
offs which begin
April 22. Lamar
is off this week
for spring break.
The Trojans,
coached by Ed
and Ricci Jules,
are 84-1 overall
and 7-1 in region
play. Their clos
est region competitor
is Monticello at 4-2 and
the Trojans cruised past
them Thursday night to
take the crown.
Last week began with
a 10-0 win over NE Ma
con. Chip Crawford and
Justin Brannan each had
three goals to pace LC.
Jay’D Lucier added two
goals while Daylan Cau-
then and Ethan Popham
had one goal each.
On Thursday, the
Trojans topped Monti
cello 5-0 in a game that
was rescheduled from
earlier in the
season due to
COV1D. Brannan
had two goals
to lead LC. Josh
Moore, Michael
Hernandez and
Cauthen added
single goals for
Lamar. Moore
had two as
sists while Joe Davis and
Daniel Navarro had one
apiece.
After the week off, the
Trojans host ACE April
13. The regular season
finale is April 16 when
Bleckley County comes
to town.
#6 LC Lady Trojans
atop region standings
The LC Lady Trojans
(9-3, 7-0) are atop the
Region 3AA standings
with one region game re
maining on the
regular season
schedule. LC
is off this week
for spring
break.
In their only
match last
week, the Lady
Trojans trav
eled to Wash
ington County Monday
and came away with a
6-2 win. Kaylah Gram-
mer and Vanessia Byrd
had two goals each to
lead LC. Alaina Cato and
Samiya Smith each had
a goal to round out the
scoring. Grammer, Cato,
Byrd and Smith
each had one
assist while Paige
Mayfield logged
two saves in goal
for LC.
The Lady
Trojans return to
the pitch April 13
when ACE comes
to town for a non-region
tilt. LC can clinch the re
gion crown when Bleck
ley County (11-2, 6-1)
comes here April 16.
