At the time, Smith said she stepped down because her “life circum stances have changed”. Elections supervisor Anita Reid reported last week she had not been contacted by Milner officials re garding the empty council post. Milner city ad ministrator Tausha Grose said a vote will be scheduled after the council accepts Smith’s resigna tion. That item was on the agenda for the coun cil meeting last night. SMITH Judge Fears to preside over trial calendar April 26 Criminal trials get underway in Lamar supe rior court April 26 with Judge Bill Fears presid ing. Cases include: Christopher Lee Long, possession of meth with intent to distribute, possession of an illegal weapon and possession of a firearm by a convict ed felon. Jamorris Antron Cole, interference with govern ment property and two counts obstruction. Richard Charles Brown, three counts aggravated assault and three counts possession of a firearm during com mission of a felony. Cases added to April 20 court calendar The following cases have been added to the April 20 criminal calen dar to be heard in Lamar superior court April 20. Judge Bill Fears will preside. David A. Dual enrollment night at LCHS set LC students and par ents interested in dual enrollment options avail able to them are invited to attend dual enrollment night at the high school April 22. For more information, call 770.358.8641. THE HERALD GAZETTE/WALTER GEIGER Grand Reserve Champion Robby Royal of Rescue Smokers won the Grand Reserve Championship over the weekend at BBQ & Blues here. Royal has long participated in the local cook-off and is a regular on the popular television series BBQ Pitmasters. He also teaches classes to educate others on how to properly prepare, cook and present competition barbecue. Georgia unemployment rate drops to 4.5%, Governor Brian R Kemp recently an nounced that Georgia’s unemployment rate dropped from 4.8% in February to 4.5% for the month of March. The national unemployment average is 6.0%. “Georgia’s economy is firing on all cylinders as a result of our bal anced approach in protecting both lives and liveli hoods during the COV1D-19 pandem ic,” said Governor Kemp. “While we still have a ways to go, our unemploy ment rate has now dropped for eleven straight months and is well below the national aver age. The Savannah Port is setting records, the Peach State continues to land major economic devel opment projects, and we’re getting more and more Georgians back to COVID-19: jobs increase work and back to nor mal. Georgia is open for business.” The total number of jobs in Georgia in March increased by 21,800,reaching a total of 4,486,000, and the total number of em ployed Georgians was up 564,000 compared to April of 2020. 14 new cases last week Lamar County had 1,326 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of the April 18 update from DPH. That number is up from 1,312 cases March 28. Lamar has had 119 coro- navirus related hospital izations. Lamar’s COV1D death toll remained at 44. As of Monday, sheriff Brad White was tracking 23 positive cases at 181o- cal residences. The cross, which was installed in 2020, includes a prayer garden, a heated baptis mal pool, and engraved bricks in honor and memoriam of individuals and families.
