Mason, who is the principal of an accounting firm, is active in the community, her church First Baptist and youth sports, among other activities. She is pictured with Rotary president Linda Olivier. Rotary announced the honor as there are currently no firm plans for an awards banquet for 2021. Doing the prom up right This young couple wowed their schoolmates when they arrived at the high school prom in a helicopter Saturday night. THE HERALD GAZETTE/WALTER GEIGER Hay trailer fire Lamar County firefighters dealt with a smoky mess Friday when a large trailer loaded with hay caught fire on Veterans Park way near its intersection with Silver Dollar Road. Smoke was thick in the area for some time as they battled the stubborn blaze. The truck pulling the trailer suffered only minor damage. Saffron too has a long list of achievements in high school and earlier, and will be a sophomore at Gordon in the fall. Her ac complishments include singing with the Honor Choir, placing in literary competitions, winning the Rotary Laws of Life essay contest, and being on the Academic Team since eighth grade. Both had high praise for those who helped along the way: parents and families, teachers, coaches, counselors and other persons in the community. Each unique young woman has made contributions toward the high standings of their high school, and this is only the beginning. Woman hit by train still critical Nancy Butts, who was hit by a freight train on her morning walk in downtown Barnesville April 22, remains hospitalized at Atlanta Medical Center where she was flown after the incident. Her husband, Don Butts, reported Sunday night she remains in 1CU and in critical condition. Nancy Butts is a published children’s author, for mer editor at The Herald Gazette and has appeared as a contestant on ‘Jeopardy’. COVID-19: Only six new cases last week Lamar County had 1,346 confirmed cases of CO VID-19 as of the May 2 update from DPH. That num ber is up from 1,340 cases April 25. Lamar has had 120 coronavirus related hospitaliza tions and 45 deaths. As of Monday, sheriff Brad White was tracking 25 positive cases at 17 local residences.
