Barnesville's Quincy Smith gets medal Specialist Petty Officer 2nd Class Quincy Smith of Barnesville was award ed the Navy Commenda tion Medal for Heroism for his role in handling a shooting incident at the Navy Recruiting Station in Greensboro, NC on Dec. 14, 2020. Smith and his counter part were manning the station when a suspect began cutting wires in the rear of the complex which housed the sta tion. They watched on surveillance cameras as the man began firing a weapon. The two sailors directed first responders to the shooter who was taken into custody. No one was injured. Barnesville mayor Peter Banks with one of the new trash carts being delivered to city residences this week. The con tainers will be for trash and recyclables. Judge Fears presides over criminal trial calendar here The following cases were adjudicated in Lamar superior court last week with Judge Bill Fears presiding. Christopher Lee Long, possession of meth with intent to distribute, possession of an illegal weapon and possession of a firearm by a convict ed felon: failed to appear, bench warrant issued. Markaisha Shalay Davis, simple assault and obstruction: five years probation, 35 weekends in county jail, $500 fine and stay away from victims. George Calvin Mays, three counts aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a con victed felon: four years in prison, 16 years proba tion, banished from TJ Outfitters. The city is going to a one-cart system for both refuse and recy clables and residents will get new trash bins this week. Traditional recycling has become ineffective and inefficient. Due to new, stricter standards, many items thought to be recyclable are going to the landfill. Under the new system, material will be taken to state-of-the-art facility to be separated. This will result in significantly higher amounts of mate rials being recycled. Beginning this week, carts and recycling bins will be collected and replaced with the new carts. Each will have a se rial number assigned to an address. Amwaste will be responsible for repair ing and replacing carts. This week you should: • Expect cart delivery between May 3-7. • Have your cart out for collection by 5 a.m. on your normal service day. • Place your cart on the curb with the open ing pointing to the street. • Bag all garbage and place it inside the cart. • Be aware batter ies, hot ashes or coals, flammable or hazardous materials, paint and tires will not be collected.
