Trashy guitar
Johnny Poore holds an electric guitar made literally from
trash. The guitar made by Gruger Guitars in Fargo, ND will be
featured in the Lamar Arts exhibit opening August 13.
Landfill waste turning into income
as “reuse, repurpose" continues
KAY S. PEDROTTI

There is a beauti
ful electric guitar - re
ally made from trash - in
Johnny Poore’s office at
the Cedar Grove Landfill,
one unique product of
years of development
by the Lamar County
Regional Solid Waste
Authority.
The guitar was made
by Gruber Guitars in
Fargo, ND, and designed
by the same engineers
who designed the “axe”
used by Dave Navarro,
a lead guitar for the Red
Hot Chili Peppers band in
the 1980s.
Conveniently enough,
Fargo also is the place
where Poore says “what
we produce as char
pellets can be changed
into 3D printer filament
and has the appropriate
name of ‘Landfillament.’”
The body of the instru
ment was crafted from
the black 3D printer
material and has had an
interesting journey. It
was put up for auction
by the Zac Brown Band
studio in Fayetteville, to
raise money for Brown’s
camp for underprivileged
children; bought back
after the auction, with
Zac Brown’s signature on
it, by the LCRSWA “be
cause we wanted to keep
it,” Poore said. It has the
usual strings and amp
connections all electric
guitars have, plus pickup
covers and a pickguard
of repurposed hemp rope
fiber.
Recently the curator
of Lamar Arts exhibits,
Angela Preston, visited
the landfill to see the
guitar and find out about
the recycling program.
She asked for and re
ceived Poore’s permis
sion to feature the guitar
in the next exhibit, “From
Hearts to Hands,” open
ing Aug. 13 at the Depot.
Along with other
made-from-trash items
(all black in color), like
coffee mugs and ball
point pens, the guitar
has emerged as a start
ing point for conversa
tions with many people
in the county about the
landfill’s “reuse, repur
pose” policy. What can
be recycled into the char
can be sold to make a
lot of different things,
Poore said. They have
sold the Landfillament
to Ford, Caterpillar and
John Deere to make vari
ous small products used
in manufacturing, like
handles and other small
pieces.
The project, not yet
fully operational, has been
financed with a loan from
the Georgia Environmen
tal Financing Authority. It
began with digging up the
old landfill and completely
recycling everything that
was not contaminated
somehow into saleable
gasses like methane and
propane and the solid
char, Poore added. He
said, “The whole country
is failing miserably at recy
cling, to make it pay both
in income and in environ
mental improvements.
When we started we were
one of three waste recla
mation operations in the
country taking the kind of
steps that we are. It’s an
expensive project but will
be well worth it over the
next few decades.”
County, cities agree to call for TSPLOST referendum
KAY S. PEDROTTI

As a result of an in
tergovernmental agree
ment signed last week by
officials of Lamar County
and the cities of Barnes-
ville, Milner and Aldora,
ballots in November will
include a referendum
to place an additional
penny sales tax in effect
for road pacing and im
provements.
Participants in a meet
ing at the Civic Center in
cluded the Lamar County
Board of Commissioners:
Chairman Charles Glass;
Nancy Thrash, Ryran
Traylor, Robert Heiney
and Bennie Horton, and
county administrator
Sean Townsend and clerk
Carlette Davison; Barnes-
ville Mayor Peter Banks
and five councilmen -
Sammie Shropshire, Bill
Claxton, Christopher
Hightower, Cecil McDan
iel and Larry Whitworth,
plus acting city manager
Tim Turner, city clerk
Tammy Folson and city
finance director Tammy
York; Mayor Andy Mar
lowe and Milner commis
sioners Skip Seda, Regina
Stephens, Michael Floyd
and George Weldon, plus
administrator Tausha
Grose; Mayor Jimmy Mat
thews of Aldora and city
clerk Linda Waterman.
Discussion covered
many aspects
pro and con
about the
new Trans
portation
Special Local
Option Sales
Tax. Much of
the discus
sion centered
on Milner’s
objections
to its low percentage of
anticipated receipts from
the new sales tax.
Glass had explained
that percentage figures
for TSPLOST were based
on the same as those for
disbursing LOST (local
option sales tax) funds
received here. Over the
five-year life of the new
tax, revenue is anticipat
ed to total more than $10
million for Lamar and its
municipalities.
The county will
handle a general ob
ligation bond not to
exceed $10,679,286,
which is to be paid off
through TSPLOST col
lections, Glass added.
That amount would
produce, according to
the approved “splits,” as
follows: Lamar County,
$6,087,286 (57%); Al
dora $320,383
(3%),
Barnesville
$3,844,602
(36%), Milner
$427,178
(4%).
Milner
councilman
Skip Seda
questioned
the percent
ages for his city and for
Aldora, which has two
miles of roads compared
to Milner’s 13 miles.
Aldora Mayor Jimmy
Matthews explained that
while roads in the little
town are not long, they
are always required to be
fixed and paved to heavy-
duty truck specifica
tions, by law. In addition,
Matthews said, Aldora’s
roads also support
Lamar County Schools
areas, churches and an
apartment complex.
Population growth and
housing developments
also were brought into
the discussion by Milner
and Barnesville officials.
County commissioner
Ryran Traylor noted
that “we’re all intercon
nected” throughout the
county, and many loca
tions are experiencing
growth that has not been
seen in recent years.
County commissioner
Nancy Thrash, who
represents the district in
which Milner is located,
made a motion to raise
that city’s share by one-
half of one percent to 4.5.
The motion died for lack
of a second, and Glass
called for an intermission
to allow the individual
governing bodies to talk
among themselves.
When the meeting
reconvened, votes were
taken one entity at a
time. Milner councilman
George Weldon com
mented he had voted
“reluctantly” for the
TSPLOST referendum
because “it will take work
on our part and a lot of
public good wifi” to get
support from voters. If
approved, the TSPLOST
penny would go into ef
fect April 1, 2022.

Hot licks, summer heat
Brandon Simpson of Barnesville put his lead guitar skills
on display at the Summer Sizzle concert at Ritz Park Satur
day. The weather was, indeed, sizzling and attendance suf
fered as a result.
