The Lamar County
Trojans (5-4, 2-3) blis
tered the Monticello Hur
ricanes (0-4, 0-8) 44-14
here last week on Senior
Night. The fourth quarter
was played with a run
ning clock due to GHSA
mercy rules.
Trojan star CJ Allen
exhibited the speed,
power and situational
awareness that has him
high on the recruiting
board over in Athens and
many other places. The
junior projects as a col
lege linebacker.
Allen opened the scor
ing with a 31-yard TD run
midway through the first
period. Josh Moore’s PAT
made it 7-0.
Just over three min
utes later, he was gone
on a 62-yard TD run.
Moore was again true
and it was 14-0.
Just 53 seconds into
the second quarter,
Devin Bateman scored
on a three-yard run. The
big play on that drive
was a 42-yard pass from
quarterback Ty Head to
Hutson Traylor. Moore’s
PAT made it 21-0.
On their first play of
the next possession, the
’Canes hit an 80-yard TD
pass as LC continued to
struggle in the defensive
backfield. The PAT was
good and it was 21-7.
With 5:47 left in the
first half, Allen picked off
an errant ‘Cane pass and
returned it 31-yards for a
score. Moore’s kick was
good and it was 28-7.
With 1:53 left in the
half, Monticello hit a
24-yard TD pass. The PAT
made it 28-14.
As time ran out in
the first half, Head hit
Traylor again, this time
for a 15-yard TD. Moore’s
PAT made it 35-14 at the
break.
With 4:30 left in the
third quarter, Tony Alt
man scored on a one-
yard run. Moore’s kick
made it 42-14.
On the ensuing pos
session, the ‘Canes
fumbled and, after the
officials cleared the pile,
it was ruled they recov
ered the ball in their own
end zone for a safety
which made it 44-14. The
30-point lead triggered
the mercy rule.
Lamar is off this
week and closes out the
season at #5 NE Macon
Nov. 5.
LC is fifth in the region
standings at 2-3. Ahead of
them are Dodge County
and Bleckley County at
2-2. Both have a head-
to-head win over Lamar.
Each has two region
games left but both have
winless Monticello as
one of those games.
That means LC has
to upset Northeast and
Dodge or Bleckley has to
lose two games, one of
which would be a huge
upset by the ‘Canes.
Braelynn Burrow got
a clutch goal with just
seconds remaining in the
match Saturday to propel
the LC Lightning U14
girls to a 3-3 tie with SSA
Coweta. LC remains un
beaten at 7-0-1 with two
matches left in regular
season play.
Also scoring goals for
LC were Ella Bleu Lever-
ett and Makiaya Howard
Chelsie Roberts had
two saves in the net for
Lamar.
