The award is presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust and sponsors. McCook moves on to the state competition. Lightning U12 girls win division LC basketball opens season with scrimmages Lamar County athletic teams will compete in Re gion 2-AA beginning with the 2022-23 school year. There will be new teams on the region schedule and some long road trips remain. The new region will include current foes NE Macon, SW Macon, Bleckley County and Dodge County. New to the schedule will be Central and Rutland of Macon, East Laurens, and Toombs County. The longest road trip, which is to Toombs County, is nearly 150 miles. The move to the new region will hurt gate income. Fans of the Macon schools do not travel well and there will The LC Lightning U14 girls won the Fury Cup mini-tournament played in Pike County over the weekend in preparation for major tournaments this weekend. In game one Satur day, LC dispatched the Butts County Tigers 4-0. Ava Bushby had a goal and an assist for Lamar, Mckenzie Smith and Nya Brown added single goals while Makaiya Howard had an assist. The Tigers suffered an own goal as well. Chelsie Roberts had two saves in the net for the Lightning. In game two, LC ended regulation tied with the Fury 2010 Select squad 3-3. Bushby, Smith and be only two non-region games on the schedule for traditional rivals. Appeals to realign ment are still pending but, during appeals, GHSA largely stood by its new classifications after the increase of the out-of- district multiplier which removed large private and city schools from Class AA. Bremen, Thomasville and Vidalia all lost ap peals to stay in AA after GHSA moved them to AAA. East Jackson and Therrell won appeals to stay in AA rather than move to AAA. GHSA moved Lovett to AAAA. It appealed to remain in AA but lost. Wren Lonberg had goals for LC in regulation while Bushby added an assist. Roberts had three saves. The match went to penalty kicks. Bushby turned away three of four Fury shots as the over time goalie and the locals won 4-3. On Sunday, the Light ning and Fury squared off in the title game with LC prevailing 3-2. Howard had two goals while Bushby had a goal and an assist. Ella Bleu Leverett had five saves in the net for LC. The Lightning will compete in the Rec Rocks tournament over the weekend in Cum- ming. The LC Lightning U12 girls won their division after finishing 9-1. Their only loss came to Pike County in the first game of the season. They later avenged that loss with a 4-0 win. Over the course of the season, the Lightning outscored opponents 96-6. LC, coached by Jeff Mason, will compete in the Rec Rocks Tourna ment this weekend in Cumming. The Lightning U12 ros ter includes Ayva Jraisat, Bristol Blount, Charlie Rose Smith, Charlise Ko- maee, Chloe James, Gab by Nail, Juliana Gotell, Kaitlyn Dawson, Kelaiah Watson, Khloe Samples, Lydia Ritch, Peyton Wil liamson, Raegyn Smith and Scarlett Bryan. Basketball season opened for the var sity teams at LC last week with scrimmages at Whitewater. In the opener, the Lady Trojans fell 63-55. Senior standout Tamya Blasingame went off for 39 points in the game. Shy Foster was also in double figures with 11. Other scorers for LC were Zhy Foster (3) and Janiyah Akins (2). In the nightcap, the Trojans lost 5945. Josh Driver led the scoring effort with 10 points. Other scorers were Ty Head (8), Channing Buckner (8), Rantavious Fluellyn (7), Cameron King (3), Tyler Mitchell (2), Ray Talmadge (2), Alex Abernathy (2), Devin Bateman (2) and CJ Allen (1). The Lady Trojan varsi ty roster includes seniors Tamya Blasingame and Zaria Fletcher, freshmen Mackeda Hubbard and Alexia Jackson, and the mammoth sophomore class of Kaylee Hamrick, Dee Dee Lyons, Chelsea Scott, Shaiciria Foster, Lauren Wilcher, Janiyah Akins, Zakiria Foster, and Journi Harris. The Lady Trojans are led by head coach Adam Ballard along with assistants Lori Greene, Amanda Ogletree and Jasmine Zellner. The LCMS Lady Trojan squad includes Alana Smith, Londyn Haygood, Christianna Bradley, Makayla Watts, Ereyanna Carter, Ella Bleu Leverett, Paris Thompson, Jenny Beverly, Diamond Foster, Ella Cate Ballard, Kayla Stewart, La’Bre Fletcher, Ja’ziyah Foster and Camari Sul livan. The Trojan varsity ros ter includes Alex Aberna thy, CJ Allen, Devin Bate man, Jamarion Bentley, Channing Buckner, Josh Driver, Rontavious Fluel lyn, Ty Head, Cameron King, Braden Maisonet, Arthur Mayes, Tyler Mitchell, Reco Walker and Ravick Talamdge. The Trojans are coached by Kerry Eng lish. The Trojan JV team consists of Kam’ron Brown, Javorian Foster, Jaydin Glover, Jordan Glover, Amon Johnson, Jy’Mir Jones, Jordan McIntosh and Darrell Wright. The LCMS boys roster was not available at press time Monday. Two Region 3-AA teams advance in football playoffs Two teams from Region 3-AA, in which Lamar County competes, advanced to the second round of the GHSA Class AA football playoffs. Bleckley County, the region’s #1 seed, squeaked by Early County 20-16 and will host Callaway in round two. The #2 seed Northeast Macon, whom LC upset in the final regular season game, topped Cook County 42-22 and will play at Haralson County this week. The #3 seed Dodge County fell to Fitzgerald 15-6 while WACO, the #4 seed, lost to Thomasville 42-7.
