As usual, The Herald Ga
zette’s annual collection of
letters to Santa provide insight
into what are the most popular
toys and the emotional strug
gles kids go through, particu
larly around Christmas.
The hottest items on the
collection of wish lists this
year are all things Barbie, guns,
bikes, baby dolls, dinosaurs,
XBox, PS5, hover boards, LOL
dolls, Popits, monster trucks,
iPhones, tablets, remote con
trol cars and Fidgets.
In her letter to the man in
red, Haven asks, “Is my elf
coming. 1 know 1 have been a
little mad but 1 am sorry.”
Adalyn has an unusual
request. “And, in my stocking, 1
just want peanut butter not to
go on anything just for me to
eat. 1 love peanut butter,” she
writes.
Andrew has a lengthy list
of wants but adds, “(T want) a
present for my sister. Give it to
me so 1 can keep it a secret.”
Rylen is hoping for $80,000
so he can give $20,000 to his
family. In addition to a punch
ing bag, a pet and a snake,
he wants “my granddaddy
to come back and to see my
girlfriend.”

LC drops
to Class A;
region
reworked
again
WALTER GEIGER

Following the mass exodus
of private schools to G1SA, the
Georgia High School Asso
ciation (GHSA) has once again
reclassified many high schools
that were in Class AA, including
Lamar County.
Basically GHSA did away
with the Class A Private and
Class A Public divisions, cre
ated Class A Divisions 1 and 2
with Division 1 schools having
the larger enrollments. LC was
among a handful of schools
which were dropped from AA
down to A Div. 1.
The others were Mt. Vernon
Presbyterian, Pelham, Trion,
Pepperell, Whitefield Academy
and Darlington.
Lamar’s new region will be
4A-Div. 1. In addition to LC,
teams in the new region are
Brookstone, Crawford County,
Heard County, Schley County
and Temple. There are rumors
out there that Brookstone will
move to G1SA as well so the
region could change again.
Darlington finished #8 in
the final 2021 Class A Private
composite football poll. Trion
finished #12 in the Class A
Private poll.
Heard County is currently
ranked #8 in Class AA girls
basketball. LC is ranked #6.
Darlington is ranked #8 in the
Class A Private boys basketball
rankings.

Lamar businesses now accept funds for rebuilding materials
KAY S. PEDR0TTI

Veteran Eddie Felton, one
of the leaders of the effort to
repair houses for needy families
in Barnesville, has announced
agreements with Jim Graham
at Balamo Building Supply and
Chuck Bankston at Bankston
Lumber Company to accept
money from donors who wish
to “help the cause” by subsidiz
ing the cost of materials.
Discussions are underway
with a Washington Street family
whose house will be the “first
on the list” of a large number of
homes in need of repairs of all
kinds, most on the north side
of town, Felton said. At present
he is also working with a local
veteran who has been living,
bedridden, in a local nursing
home for two years, at $1,500
a month, and has been told he
has been turned down for assis
tance by the Veterans Adminis
tration.
“This is not an uncommon
case,” Felton said. “All those
who attend this person, from
doctors and nurses to the
Georgia VA hospitals, have said
he should be eligible. It’s just
one of the many cases we hear
about and try to do what we
can (through American Legion
Post 516). A lot of those who
need help and are not getting it
are female veterans; it seems to
be especially hard for them.”
Those wishing to donate to
the cost of building materials,
or to help the Post help veter
ans, may call Felton at 239-770-
7132. The restoration project is
in connection with Barnesville
First United Methodist Church
as a part of their 501©3 non
profit designation.
