A bystander was hit in the shoulder by a bullet but recovered from the injury. Several vehicles were hit in two fusillades of shots fired at the scene. War rants were obtained for Ceddrick Deon Turpin, 24, for armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Turpin also had outstanding warrants for armed robbery in Camilla, Ga. Dep. Justyn Weaver (at lectern) was overcome by emotion Aug. 19 as he gave a victim impact statement at a sentenc ing hearing for Donald Chandler Gordy who shot him in the face with a shotgun last summer. Man who shot deputy pleads guilty A 39-year-old Milner man who allegedly ambushed a Lamar deputy Aug. 8, 2020 entered guilty pleas to all charges he faced. Deputy Justin Weaver an swered a suspicious person call in the 100 block of Moore Street in Milner around 10:45 p.m. and had traversed the street several times when Gordy alleg edly popped out of the woods and opened fire with a shotgun, discharging five rounds of #4 turkey shot at Weaver’s patrol car at close range. He fled but was arrested around 3 a.m. near Birmingham. The com munity rallied around deputy Weaver as he recovered from his injuries, including a shot to the face. Gordy was sentenced to 35 years in prison by Judge Bill Fears Aug. 19. County buys the former Fred's building Lamar County commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 17 to proceed with the purchase of the old Fred’s building on Veterans Parkway. The 22,222 square foot building sits on 6.72 acres and was owned by Barnesville Perlmix. The building has three tenants, including American Pie, 1st Franklin Finan cial and Georgia Roots Boutique which pay around $50,000 all total in rent each year. The county dis cussed using the building to house administrative of fices, a meeting room, the elections board (as well as election equipment storage), the tax assessors office, the tax commissioner’s office, the planning develop ment office and the county extension office. Inca dove draws bird watchers to Redbone A dove rarely seen in Georgia showed up in Redbone early in August and brought birdwatchers flocking to the area to observe and photograph the Inca dove. It was the first Inca dove documented outside the southwestern corner of the state. SEPTEMBER Drive-by shootings plague Barnesville Barnesville Police Department investigators were looking into the third drive-by shooting in just over a month in the city. Zion Pate allegedly opened fire on a car parked in a First Street driveway Sept. 2. Ac cording to a witness, there were three adult children in the car shot at but there were no injuries. War rants were issued for Pate Sept. 3. He turned himself in to Spalding authorities Sept. 14 and spent two days in jail before being released on a $42,500 bond. A 40-year-old Barnesville man was arrested Aug. 27 after shooting at three females, including a 9-year-old girl, with a shotgun from his vehicle around 6:30 p.m. He was arrested shortly after during a traffic stop. All three of the females shot were taken to a Macon trauma center and released.
