Initial blasting at Vulcan quarry
The first blasting was conducted at the Vulcan Minerals quarry off Hwy. 36 East March 3 with a handful of local officials and neighbors present. Quarry
manager Barry Lawson said 110 holes were drilled and filled with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel. Zeke Harvey, who operates a tree farm adjacent to the
nearly 600-acre quarry site, set off the explosion which was much more quiet than the visitors expected.
The blast fragmented the soil and lesser quality rock from atop the granite which is 25 feet down. The quarry entrance will soon be improved and about
4,000 feet of acceleration/deceleration lanes will be installed along the highway. Blasting is expected to be a weekly occurrence at the the quarry once it is
fully operational.

Hope Tree 'Front
Porch Sale' is Sat.
KAY S. PEDROTTI
kayspedrotti@gmail.com
The community has been very generous to
Hope Tree and the Food Bank, says director
Jimmy Fambro, so “1 think we should offer
something in return.”
There will be a Front Porch Sale at the
Food Bank building, College and Carleeta
Streets, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or “until all that’s
outside is sold at very reasonable prices,”
Fambro added.
Since Hope Tree helps people in need with
things other than food - like furniture, bed
ding and dishes - the relatively small building
tends to get crowded, he said.
“Come on over and see what’s here on the
12th. Not quite so big as our yard sales, but a
whole lot of good stuff at good prices - and a
lot of fun,” Fambro said.
In case of bad weather, the event will be
postponed until March 19.
