County adopts new policy for indigent burials WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com At the behest of coroner Clay Tillery, the Lamar County commis sion approved a new policy governing indigent burials. There is a long tradi tion of governments burying the indigent or, as they were once known, paupers. A large section of Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville is filled with paupers’ graves dat ing back to the time the community was founded. Under the new policy, taxpayer assistance to in digent families is capped at $500 whether burial or cremation is chosen. The person in question must have died in Lamar County. The application process will be handled by the county clerk who will make sure no life insurance was in place or other means of paying for the services is available. Once invoiced, funeral directors can expect to be paid within 10-15 busi ness days. IDI Land Holdings seeking rezoning for 845 acres near Lamar rock quarry The Monroe County zoning board heard a request from IDI Land Holdings Monday night to rezone 845 acres adjacent to its Lamar quarry site from agricultural-residential to industrial. The land in question is just east of the Landmark Materi als quarry site on property near the intersection of Hwy. 41 South and Crawford Road. IDI chief operating officer Chris Wieters said the land could be used for warehouses or distribution centers though the company does not currently have buyers lined up. The Lamar County commis sion unanimously approved the quarry on a 331.24-acre site adjacent to the Monroe prop erty on Sept. 21, 2021. Wieters said the company hopes to begin mining opera tions on the site in early 2023. THE HERALD GAZETTE/WALTER GEIGER Emotional moment for Trojan baseball After a long absence due to seizures and other complications that followed a bout with COVID, senior pitcher Tanner Patterson took the mound one last time on Senior Night Friday at Aldora Field. It was an emotional moment for Patterson, his family, teammates and coaches as he threw his first live pitch in over a year. The Trojans won the game 17-2 and clinched home field advantage for the playoffs which begin Friday. (See story, page 6B). Animal shelter on the move again Subscribe. Your name goes on the label in this box WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com Concerns over sewage capacity have county authori ties once again looking around for a new site for the proposed animal shelter. The shelter was originally going in adjacent to the rodeo arena and wetlands trail on Roberta Drive. Then it got moved to the west side of the wetlands trail across the ser vice road from the bus barn. The site was even cleared for the work. However, the school board raised concerns about that site so the shelter is on the move again. The most likely spot cur rently under consideration is near the intersection of Pea cock and South streets behind the high school complex and adjacent to the scout hut. In the works is a land swap in which the county will acquire that area in exchange for the parcel near the bus barn. Final site selection and the swap are pending a study of sewer capacity at the new location. Amwaste has pledged $10,000 to help solve the sew age problem, commissioner Nancy Thrash reported. This is a rendition of the proposed animal shelter that is on the move again. VOTE Early voting begins Monday Early voting in the May 24 general primary gets underway Monday, May 2 at the elections board office in the county an nex. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Two Saturday voting ses sions are scheduled for May 7 and May 14. Several local races will be decided in the general primary. For more information, call the elections office at 770.358.5235. Book sale Saturday The semi-annual used book sale to benefit the Barnesville- Lamar County Library is Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the library on Thom- aston Street. Books are sorted into more than twenty-five categories to make it easy to find books of interest. Books can be bought individually at bargain prices or a shopper can fill a milk box for $5. Tickets for the Friends of the Barnesville-Lamar County Spring Basket Raffle also will be available: five tickets for $20 or one ticket for $5. The winner of the two baskets of spring-inspired items, which include gift cards to Ingles and Dairy Queen, will be drawn at noon. Drive-by shooter to serve 30 years in prison A 41-year-old Barnesville man was sentenced to 30 years in prison April 21 for opening fire on a home on Washington Street in Barnesville and wounding three females, one of whom was nine years old. Travis Lael Mercer of 225 Washington St. was arrested shortly after the drive-by shooting on Aug. 27, 2021 and has been in jail since. The adult victims, Vicky Jackson and India Jackson, and the juvenile have recovered from their injuries. Mercer entered guilty pleas to two counts aggravated as sault, three counts possession of a firearm during the commis sion of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Judge Bill Fears sentenced Mercer to 30 years in prison followed by 70 years on proba tion. He was also ordered to forfeit the firearm used in the shooting. Testimony revealed Mercer got into an argument with India Jackson over driving while drinking. He left only to return shortly thereafter and open fire with a shotgun.
