Strategic planning
update set for schools this week

School officials,
employees and com
munity members heard
the official kickoff for the
Lamar County school
system’s new five-year
strategic plan at an initial
meeting last night at the
high school. The five
draft strategic goal areas
include student achieve
ment; facilities, budget,
safety and operations;
professional develop
ment; communication,
climate and culture, and
post-secondary career
prep.
Progress reports were
to be provided on facility
improvements, including
playgrounds, roofs and
HVAC systems. Current
projects underway in
clude a refurbished play
ground at the primary
and elementary school,
new roof and HVAC
system for the middle
school, and system im
provements as needed.
At last week’s school
board meeting, Dr. Jute
Wilson, superintendent,
commented, “Once the
list is completed, we will
be solid on our facilities
for the entire K-12 com
plex for some time to
come.”
In other action at the
BOE meeting, recogni
tions were given for RESA
writing and math compe
titions; support staffers
of the year, including
Angel Brown, primary
school counselor; Char
lotte Minter, elementary
parapro; Lakesha Mur
phy, middle school para
pro, and Brenda Foster,
high school registrar.
It was announced that
the US Department of
Agriculture awarded “Sil
ver Status” to the Lamar
County food and nutri
tion program for its par
ticipation and adherence
to guidelines in USDA’s
“Turnip the Beet” compe
tition to encourage more
vegetable options and
opportunities in school
food programs.

as special needs direc
tor will transition into
assistant superintendent
June 1, replacing deputy
superintendent Cleve
Hendrix, who is retiring
at the end of this school
year.

Scarlett Sanders, primary
school second grade
student, second place
in the region; and Scout
Woodall, a sixth-grade
student at the middle
school, first place. Wilson
reminded everyone that
“our region includes
eight counties, several of
which are much bigger
than Lamar. It is a real
accomplishment when
our students place high
in the RESA awards, and
we’re very proud of all of
them.”
Also taking second
place in the RESA re
gional middle school
math competition was
the Lamar team of
Wyatt Southern, Hayden
Cherry, Robert Erickson,
Caden Crawford and Ava
Bushby. Dr. Ann Jones led
the math team.
Wilson said coaching
appointments will be
made at the June board
of education meeting. He
commended this year’s
baseball and soccer
teams and others for
their season successes.

The Lamar County
Trojans swept two region
games from the NE
Macon Raiders last week
to finish second in the
region and clinch home
field advantage for the
first round of the state
playoffs.
The Trojans will host
Early County, the #3
seed from Region 1-AA,
in round one at Aldora
Field. Playoff action be
gins Friday with a double-
header. Game one is set
for 4:30 p.m. with game
two to follow 30 minutes
after the completion of
game one.
Game three, if needed,
will be played
here Saturday at
1 p.m.
Last week,
LC trounced NE
Macon twice.
On Tuesday, LC
plated 15 runs in
the first inning en route
to a 18-0 win. The game
was over after three in
nings by mercy rule. Cam
King no hit the Raiders,
striking out seven to get
the win.
Ayden Hollis had two
hits and three rbis to
pace LC. Brayden Pines
added four rbis. Rhett
Blount had three hits.
Donavan Sanford had two
hits while King helped
his own cause with three
rbis.
^ On Friday, the
Trojans spanked
the Raiders again

pitcher Tanner Patterson
started the game. Pat
terson has been out of
action for a long period
due to seizures and other
difficulties arising from a

LC. Talon Dender had
two hits and two rbis.
Blount had two hits and
Nathaniel Tidwell drove
in two runs.
