Mildred “Millie" Fern
Jacob Merchant
Mildred Fern Jacob Merchant (Millie) transitioned
to eternal rest on April 18, 2022. Born in Barnes
ville, Lamar County, Georgia on February 15, 1937 to
beloved parents Clifford Jacob, Sr. and Gennie Wyche
Jacob, Millie was the sixth of eleven children. Mil
lie was a graduate of Lamar Industrial School, Fort
Valley State University, the University of Connecti
cut and the University of Bridgeport, receiving high
school, undergraduate and masters degrees / sixth
year certificates in education and school administra
tion, respectively. She completed a distinguished
career in education, retiring in 1996 as the Personnel
Director for the Stamford, Connecticut school sys
tem. Though she spent her professional life in Con
necticut, in 1998, in satisfaction of a lifelong dream,
Millie returned home to Barnesville. Once there she
dedicated herself to both her family and to the com
munity. Though her dedication to her family cannot
be measured, it would be accurate to say that having
the opportunity to come home and reconnect with
the larger family is something she treasured. On the
community side, Millie felt strongly about getting
involved and giving back and this she did in abun
dance. The list of activities in which she participated
is tremedous, and her absence will surely be felt
across Barnesville and in larger Lamar County. To
name a few of her civic contributions - member of
the Barnesville Zoning Board of Appeals, the Lions
Club, the Lamar County Democrats, the Art Center at
the Depot in Barnesville and Lamar County Schools
Fine Arts. One endeavor of note involved research
conducted for the restoration of the Rosenwald
Schools, including the former site at Sugar Hill AME
Church. Millie leaves behind her daughter Susan
Merchant of Newtown, CT (Hong Kong), her sister
Thelma J. Treadwell of Newnan, GA, her sister Myrtis
J. Johnson of Fairfield, CT, sisters-in-law, Dorothy
Jacobs (Atlanta, GA), as well as a host of nieces and
nephews and grand nieces and nephews. At her
homecoming she reunites with siblings Elizabeth Hall
(Barnesville, GA), Clarence Jacob (East Point, GA),
Clifford (Ann) Jacob, Jr. (Decatur, GA), Gladys Allen
(Barnesville, GA), Hazel (Jessie) Freeman (Staten Is
land, NY), Carlton Jacob (Atlanta, GA), Essie (Arthur)
Smith (Barnesville, GA) and Earl Jacob (Barnesville,
GA), who preceded her. Services were held Saturday,
April 23, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. at The Lamar County
Schools Fine Arts Center, 100 Burnette Road, Barnes
ville, GA. 30204.

Election ballot question
FROM PAGE 2A
A series of requests
led to the exclusion from
the Republican primary
ballot of the non-binding
question, “Should the
county commission make
it a priority to ensure
Lamar County maintains
its rural nature?” Such
questions may be gener
ally placed on partisan
ballots as a means of
gathering data for party
platforms, but there
are steps dictated by
the Georgia secretary
of state to cover that
process.
When asked some
time ago by the local
Republican chair to place
the question on the bal
lot, elections supervisor
Anita Reid contacted a
liaison in the state office.
The contact said the
party would have to go
through the county com
mission to include the
question, which was ap
parently not done, since
Reid did not hear from
the commissioners and
therefore did not include
the question.
Christopher proposed
three possible solutions
to the board: to reprint
all the primary ballots
with the question, which
would entail working
through the weekend
and spending $8,000 to
$10,000; to continue with
the election without the
question, and the solu
tion approved was to
include the question on a
later ballot.
Attending the meeting
besides Reid and Christo
pher were board mem
bers Monica Walters,
Scott Cone, Mike Perry,
Elaine Williams, and
county manager Sean
Townsend.
Dietrich: Mama's boy
FROM PAGE 4A
taught them how to hold
in their tears.
I was so envious I
wanted to puke. I des
perately wanted some
one to sit beside me on
the porch, crack open
a Budweiser, offer me a
sip, then fuzz my hair
and say, “Don’t tell your
mama.” I wanted some
one to slap my backside
whenever I came trotting
off the Little League dia
mond and tell me, “Good
hustle out there.”
Instead, I had the
coiffed hair brigade.
But as I get older, I
realize truly how lucky
I was. And I particularly
realized this today at the
supermarket.
Today, I saw two
young women, walking
into the store. They were
in their mid-twenties.
Ahead of them, lingering
on the sidewalk beside
the door, were several
young men.
As the young women
approached, the young
men did nothing. They
didn’t smile, they didn’t
greet the young women,
they didn’t tip their caps,
they didn’t run to open
the door. You know what
they did? They played on
their phones.
That’s when I saw a
kid trot toward the door.
He was maybe 10 years
old. The young boy
tossed the door open for
them. And then, as if the
kid hadn’t done enough,
as the young women
passed he removed his
cap to reveal a mop of
sweaty brown hair.
I don’t know much
about life, and I know
even less about the
nature of this world. But
I know one thing: I’m
grateful I was raised by
women.
