They call him Chaos - once a wild mustang
Mike Leverett, who owns Marigold Stables in Monroe County and his dark palomino mustang named Chaos. (Photo and
story by Steve Reece)
To train a horse is no
easy task but to train a
mustang taken directly
from the wild is an ex
ceptional feat that only a
few trainers would dare
attempt. Mike Leverett
who owns one of Monroe
County’s most beautiful
horse stables, Marigold
Stables, is one of those
rare trainers.
In November, Leverett
applied to compete in the
Extreme Mustang Make
over to be held in Ocala,
Florida on April 29-30.
The Event is sponsored
by the Mustang Heritage
Foundation in conjunc
tion with the Bureau of
Land Management. Lev
erett then acquired a
beautiful dark palomino
mustang named Chaos in
Bell, Florida in December
where he was shipped
after being rounded up
at the Diamond Hills
Nevada Herd Manage
ment Area in September
of 2020. Chaos was born
in 2016 at the Diamond
Hills HMA which consists
of 90,000 acres where
mustangs run free.
He took Chaos to the
Marigold Stables on
January 15 with only 100
days to break, tame and
train him with handling &
conditioning, pattern ma
neuvers and to be able to
complete a trail obstacle
course. If he makes it to
the finals, Chaos will be
expected to do a free
style performance set to
music. At the end of the
competitions the mus
tangs will be auctioned
off to the highest bidder
and Leverett will have
the opportunity to pur
chase him if he chooses.
The Bureau of Land
Management (BLM)
manages and protects
wild horses and burros
on 26.9 million acres of
public lands across 10
western states as part of
its mission to administer
public lands for a variety
of uses. The Wild Horse
and Burro Program’s
goal is to manage healthy
wild horses and burros
on healthy public range-
lands.
To maintain healthy
herds and not overstress
the rangelands, the BLM
determines the number
of wild horses that the
environment can sustain
at healthy levels. The ex
cess horses are rounded
up (usually by helicop
ter) into large holding
pens. The BLM works to
place the excess horses
& burros into private
care through its Adop
tion and Sales Programs
as well as partnerships
with organizations such
as the Mustang Heritage
Foundation.
There are currently
over 82,000 wild horses
and burros under BLM
protection on open
rangelands. Over half
of these are in Nevada.
Wild horses and burros
herd sizes can double
every four years. As a
result, the BLM removes
thousands of animals
from the range each year
as part of its efforts to
control herd sizes. Cur
rently, the BLM has over
60,000 horses in corrals
or pastures at a cost to
the US taxpayers of over
$50 million annually. For
a horse that remains in a
BLM facility for its entire
life, the cost can reach
$50,000 per animal.
The Mustang Heritage
Foundation is a non-prof
it organization estab
lished in 2001 with a mis
sion to help wild horses
and burros by decreasing
the numbers held in BLM
holding facilities and
increasing the number of
successful adoptions and
placements into private
care. Since its inception,
MHF has placed more
than 20,000 mustangs
and burros into private
care.
Leverett also par
ticipated in the thorough
bred makeover recently
competing retired race
horses and said there is a
lot of difference between
training a domesticated
thoroughbred and a wild
mustang but after watch
ing Chaos go through
his moves, you will have
no doubt he was up to
the challenge. Leverett
grew up on a farm and
came to Monroe County
from Lamar County with
his wife Karen and two
daughters, Marcelene
and Maradeth. He started
Marigold Stables in 2011
which has 52 acres sus
taining 30 horses.
The Family of
Tori Proctor
Thank you to everyone in Monroe County and Forsyth for
their prayers, texts, calls, donations, gifts of food and words
of comfort during the loss of our daughter Tori. The love and
support shown has been so great it’s overwhelming. The kind
ness and thoughtful acts show; us how’ much Tori was loved!
Thank you to the community! Thank you family and
friends! And thank you to those who have reached out to us and from out of
town and even out of state. Thank you to Deputy Thompson of the Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office for his professional actions and to Scott Bogulski
for setting up a drive for donations for Tori’s baby; everything from formula
to diapers means so much to us. A special thank you to the Classes of 2018
and 2016 for their help.
The support and donations are so appreciated 1 don’t have words to
express what they mean to me. 1 don’t want to forget anyone, and 1 want
everyone to know how much they mean to Tori’s family in this difficult time.
Please continue to pray for us as we will need it in the days to come.
