Yevak in

Freshman pitcher
Brinkley Yevak, a former
LC standout, turned in
two stellar pitching per
formances in a critical
doubleheader May 20 to
lead Auburn-Montgom-
ery to the South Region
Softball Championship
for the first time in
school history. AUM lost
the first game of a three-
game series with Valdo
sta State and went into
the twinbill needing to
win both games to take
the title. The Warhawks
prevailed 3-2 in Game
1 with Yevak throwing
five scoreless innings in
relief.Yevak started Game
2 and went the distance
in a tight 2-1 win. She al
lowed only two hits and
no earned runs. AUM (49-
11) defeated Seton Hall
(41-11) 7-3 in the first
round Thursday night.
They were to play North
Georgia, a team they
defeated twice during the
regular season, in round
two Friday, after our
early holdiday deadline.

Four key local po
litical races were con
cluded in the General
Primary last week. Only
4177 of Lamar’s 12,877
registered voters cast
ballots, a turnout of
32.44%.
The only countywide
race decided last week
was that for county
commission chairman.
In that race, Ryran
Traylor won every dis
trict as he outpolled fel
low Republican James
Hyde 1870-1214.
Traylor has no
Democrat opposition in
November.
In the District 2
commission race,
political newcomer Jar-
rod Fletcher defeated
longtime incumbent
Bennie Horton 198-130.
Fletcher has no Repub
lican opposition in the
general election.
In Milner, Christo
pher Eady narrowly
defeated Rickey Fallings
101-94 and will fill the
empty city council seat
there.
In the House District
135 race, incumbent
Beth Camp trounced
Dan Brue in local voting
1540422. Districtwide,
Camp took nearly 80%
of the votes cast. She
has no Democrat op
position in the general
election.
In the District 2
county commission
race, Don Coffey led
with 459 votes. Jason
Lovett got 340 votes.
Those two will be on
the runoff ballot June
21 after outpolling
Chase Hassey (129
votes) and Bill Daniel
(48 votes). The win
ner will face Democrat
Ulanda Barkley in
November.
Other big winners
locally and statewide
were Herschel Walker,
Brian Kemp, Burt Jones
and Brad Raffensperger.

The Cupid Shuffle for seniors
Dianne Smith was all smiles as she put the senior center line dancing troupe through their paces at Senior Fitness
Day last week at the civic center. Various organizations, including the local health department, put on the event for se
niors, providing activity and information.
Free line dancing classes are held at the senior center every Monday from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

He plans to serve Christ as
a Cardiologist after attend
ing Med School.

to be
sentenced

A 57-year-old Thomas-
ton woman who was al
legedly drunk and driving
south in the northbound
lane on Ga. Hwy. 7 when
she caused a fatal ac
cident will be sentenced
in Lamar superior court
June 7.

Whatley is charged with
first degree vehicular
homicide, DU1 (drugs and
alcohol), reckless driving
and driving on the wrong
side of the road in con
nection with the March 5,
2021 crash that mortally
injured Nathaniel Suggs,
38.
Whatley, who is now
free on a $100,000 bond,
has indicated she will
throw herself upon the
mercy of the court.
According to the state
patrol, Whatley had
been southbound in the
northbound lane in a
2008 Honda Accord LX
since being in the area of
the Griffin Ingle’s when
she struck a 2005 Toyota
Tacoma driven by Jeremy
Ryan Knight, 26, of Madi
son near Milner at 10:10
p.m. The Toyota left the
roadway and overturned.
Suggs was a passenger
in the truck and had to be
extricated. He was life-
flighted to Grady Hospital
in Atlanta where he died
March 8, 2021. Neither
Whatley nor Knight were
injured.
Whatley faces up to 15
years in prison.

ments. All of them were
mailed by May 24. The last
day to file an appeal is July
8.
Appeals may be filed by
letter or e-mail to taxasses-
sor@lamarcountyga.com.
You can also appeal in
person at the office.
Appeals are based on
homestead/special use
exemption denials, unifor
mity or value.
You must choose among
three appeal options. One
is through the Board of
Equalization with an ap
peal to superior court.
The other choices are
arbitration or a hearing
before a county officer.
