Newspaper Page TextHERE’S THE SCOOP Adams to lead state's prosecutors Towaliga Circuit dis trict attorney Jonathan Adams has been elected president of the District Attorneys Association of Georgia (DAAG). His term will begin July 1. The Towaliga Circuit includes Lamar, Mon roe and Butts counties. Adams has served the circuit since 2017. DAAG recognizes the vital role prosecutors play in the safety of local communities. Prosecu tors are responsible for carrying out justice in a fair and equitable man ner, protecting the rights of victims and holding accountable those who violate the law. In addition, the at torneys in the Towaliga Circuit recently elected Adams to represent them on Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia. “Prosecutors and the entire judicial system in Georgia are facing extreme challenges. We are still dealing with massive COV1D backlogs and significant differ ences of opinion on how to prosecute crime. It is important to balance progressive initiatives by some DAs with common sense approaches to reduce crime and protect the rights of our victims. It should be the ultimate goal of every prosecutor to ensure our communi ties are safe places to live, work and raise a family,” Adams said. Subscribe. Your name goes on the label in this box 96852 78853 Big changes coming at High Falls Rd. interchange WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com Big changes are coming for the long undeveloped property surrounding the High Falls Road exit off 1-75 after a developer purchased 1,229 acres which includes all four corners of the inter change. The price tag was $7.8 million. If you are wondering what the place could look like in a few years, look no further than the Griffin-Jackson exit. Will Davis of the Monroe County Reporter tied the LLC involved to investor Doug Adams who is developing the River Place complex on the northeast side of the interstate there which will include a distribution center for Proctor & Gamble. The LLC tied to Adams is High Falls 75, LLC. It is headquar tered in Stockbridge and its registered agent is Adam Printz. Of the property acquired, 764.95 acres is in Lamar County. It was acquired from two other LLCs, Griggs Pines and Jstone 75, LLC. The registered agent for both of those is Anna N. Smith of Forsyth. The Class of 2023 was the first graduating class to spend all four years at the new high school facility. The graduation ceremony was conducted during fierce winds that blew over potted plants and scattered stacked diplomas but none of the seniors seemed to mind. Fugitive fentanyl dealer busted Friday WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com Lamar deputies and agents from the U.S. Marshals fugitive squad arrested alleged fentanyl dealer Khalif Lee Friday morning at a home located at 151 Grove Street in Barnesville. “Federal agents came in and we tracked him. We served warrants and dug him out of his mother’s home on Grove Street. He is charged locally with traf ficking in and distribution of fentanyl and also has multiple federal warrants,” one of the agents said. The arrest was made at about 10:20 a.m. Deputies originally raided the home May 11 and seized some three ounces of fentanyl. They ques tioned his mother but Lee, 28, was not in the home at the time. He has been on the run since. Lee is considered to be a major dealer and his product may have contributed to several local over dose deaths recently, the agent concluded. Dep. Mike Womack leads Khalif Lee into the local jail. Details emerge regarding fatal crash on Hwy. 36 East WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com The Georgia State Patrol has released a preliminary report on a May 22 crash that killed a local man. Wesley Wayne Hag- wood, 42, of 2228 Brown lee Rd. in Jackson was eastbound on Hwy. 36 East near Chappell Mill Road in a 2018 Subaru Outback. The Subaru was hit in the rear by a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Ryan Scott Saccucci, 39, of 104 Savan nah Way in Milner. The Outback rotated counterclockwise and entered the westbound lane where it was struck in the right rear by a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup and overturned. The truck was driven by Susan English Thompson, 62, of 2719 Hwy. 36, also in Milner. Thompson was taken to Upson Regional Medical Center by ambulance with injuries listed as serious, according to the report. Saccucci was uninjured. Hagwood was dead at the scene and it took some time to extricate his body from the wreckage. Saccucci is listed as the at fault driver and the re port notes he was follow ing the dead man’s vehicle too closely. Charges are pending. Driver in truck-train collision identified WALTER GEIGER news@barnesville.com The Georgia State Patrol has released its report on a May 15 incident in which a Musella man drove his pickup into the path of a freight train at the local industrial park. David Lee Frasier, 41, was at the wheel of a 2021 Chevy Silverado when he drove into the path of a southbound Norfolk-South ern train while leaving the park near the intersection of Old Milner Road and Grove Street. Frasier was flown to a Macon trauma center and, at last report, was recuperating well from his injuries. Fraiser told troopers he was going to lunch and stopped when he heard the train’s horn but was hit immediately in the left front fender by the train. The locomotive was operated by Daniel David Cherney of Kathleen, Ga.
